Lefty or righty? - thipfan73 - 02-26-2005

Ok so this came about talking with some of my fellow lefties

the next time some says "Hey you're left handed?!?"

I'm going to say either

"Oh, no! Are you sure?"

"WOW! I NEVER NOTICED THAT! HOLY SHIT!"

or

"HOLY SHIT! SOMEONE CALL RIPLEY'S!!!"

PS: Yes, our beloved Mr Downie is a lefty

When you're left handed...which I assume you're not...and you start to write, sometimes people look at you and freak out like "OH MY GOD, YOU'RE LEFT HANDED" like you're some kind of freak of nature or something. It's something I have experienced all of my life. It gets annoying after a while because it's second nature to me and I don't think about it.

I've heard it many times and so have my lefty friends. Maybe it's a US thing.

I'm glad someone else finally understands me. People I have known my entire life look at me funny one day and go, "Jeff, you're left-handed?" It's always a total shock. We lefties are weird. It's the truth.

Oh yeah, I come from a long line of weird people and I'm a left on top of it, explains a lot doesn't it lol

I hate that joke "hire the left-handed, it's fun to watch them write"

- beanmedic - 02-27-2005

That is fucked.

I'm a righty although when I was younger I always wanted to be a lefty, I thought they were so cool. Big Grin

My mom is originally a lefty but when she was younger that wasn't allowed. Teachers slapped her with a ruler when she wrote left-handed so she became a righty. Now when she writes with her left hand for fun, she still has the handwriting of a child, it's like it froze in time.

I'm right handed, but I play hockey, baseball (batting only) and golf as a lefty. I also hunt/target shoot as a lefty.

WOW thats really interesting. there must have been some real hatred toward lefties.

I write and play guitar as a lefty (Which sucks, there's not as big a guitar selection for us southpaws) but I play hockey, throw a ball, and mostly do everything else with my right....

My brother's like that too. Is it just me or does this seem more of a normal thing than you might think, especially in Canada?

- The Darkest Canuck - 02-28-2005

i eat with either, swing a bat with either, shoot a puck, golf, throw, play guitar, and write with my right.

I'm a lefty and my left-handed friends and I notice other lefties. It's like being a Canadian in the US, or a Texan in Canada, or something like that--you feel like this other person is part of your little secret society.

In that light, I was pleased to note that Gord D and Robby are both left-handed, as well as both Greg Keelor and Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo.

The business of "correcting" lefties went on for years, and I recently ran into the term "misplaced sinisters" (which sounds like a band) which refers to natural lefties who were forced to become right-handed. And at about the same time I read an abstract of a medical article that referred to adverse effects of ultrasound on pregnant women--one was "non-righthandedness" in some resulting babies.

I never, until that point, thought my lefthandedness was a birth defect...
