The Seinfeld-Hip Connection - Stephen Dame - 02-24-2005

Above the computer, right next to the window at the back of his apartment, Jerry's got that stock image of a lightning strike (The one inside TATH) framed on the wall.

You can see it any episode that takes place in his swingin' pad.

If any other earth shattering developments emerge from these over priced DVD's, I'll let ya know.

On a somewhat related note, it strikes me that many hipbasers (myself included) are not only nuts about the Hip, but Seinfeld as well. Could it be the genius present in both?

Count me in as well, I love Seinfeld, I actually taped every single episode it took me about 2 years to do it, and I still watch them anytime I need a Seinfeld fix. Smile

most overrated show ever!! yes i've said it!!! they had a few "classic" episodes, and the rest are crap...

i'm gonna get it now ain't i??

In a time where "reality" TV rules the airwaves, it is refreshing to go back to Seinfeld to see what talented sitcom writing was all about. With the exception of Arrested Development and Trailer Park Boys, everything on TV today is mindless, thoughtless, and without artistic passion. Seinfeld set a bar in sitcom writing that has yet to be topped, or even reached, IMO.

I agree Seinfeld is the greatest show ever, it's one of the few shows I can watch reruns of and not get tired of them.

I agree!!! It was good for a while there and then it was like crappy. Yes, it was will written and funny and all that but after a while it got annoying. Same with Friends!

So true! In fact I can't think of a single episode that didn't make me laugh out loud at least a couple of times. As for great comedy writing, Curb Your Enthusiasm is arguably the best show on TV right now. Larry David is a freakin' genius. Other great shows are 24 and CSI Vegas. Not a big fan of the Miami and NY spinoffs.

Believe it or not Desperate Housewives is a VERY funny show, it's actually a comedy!

The only other shows I watch are Law and Order SVU, What Not To Wear, CSI Las Vegas and I sometimes catch Mythbusters

Comparing the pathetic mess that is Friends with the genius, the ingenuity and the cutting edge hilarity of Seinfeld is like comparing the Tragically Hip to B4-4 (remember them). Sure, they were both from Ontario, and they both had major followings (the latter albeit briefly), but past that there were no similarities. Friends is a show based on the antics of a group of unusually rich, unusually stupid, oversexed, hardcore stereotypes, the kind that are so average, so normal and so common that they don't even exist in society. Seinfeld examines human relation between similar, yet notably different characters in the societal whirlpool that was the early 90s. Friends is made to make pretentious preteens, boring teenagers and insecure 20-somethings laugh. Seinfeld is made to comment on life in a Western World metropolis just before the turn of the century. Its only funny to people who can understand the real humour behind it.

I think you may be overstating slightly...but, you're pro-Seinfeld so meh, whatever.
