I mean if you really want to put things in perspective, is there even a point when a bunch of consumer-culture wealthy Westerners talk about their favourite band on an internet forum while 30,000 Black Muslims are systematically being killed in the Darfur? Well anyway that is just my take...

Sorry, friend, but perhaps you are spending time in the wrong forum then? I am sorry that there is so much suffering in the world. I am bombarded by the images every single day of my life from all types of media, but as a modest, paycheck-to-paycheck-living Father of a beautiful 8-month old daughter and the proud fiance of the most beautiful woman on the face of the planet, there is very little I can do outside of the tiny wonderful corner of the Earth that I can call my own. I see the suffering, I see the carnage, and I despair, but then I look into my daughter's smiling big blue eyes that she got from her Mommy, and I know that there is still hope for the world. We all come here because we love something, we think positive about something. For a lot of people that post to this forum, or even simply READ and lurk, it is one of the very few positive things that they may have in their own personal world. It has nothing to do with wealth, or that we live in the Western world. It's not that we don't care, or think about those less fortunate than us. Do an informal poll about how many of us here made ANY type of donation, or volunteered their time in the effort to help those that were affected by the tsunami on December 26th.
again... it is a travesty of humanity that 30000 Black Muslims are being killed in Darfur. It's a travesty that even ONE Black Muslim is being systematically killed. There is no excuse, nor rhyme, nor reason for it. Nor is there rhyme nor reason for the continued poverty in our own country, nor reason for those drunk drivers on the roads of the town that you live in that may kill a family member or close friend. There is no rhyme nor reason for any of these travesties of humanity, but they are there.
Yes, Nick, there is much sadness in the world, but I invite you to look for your own personal silver lining. Ron (a cherished member of this forum) found his: it was his daughter, who, thank God, pulled through just fine. That beautiful little girl is his life, as my daughter is mine. No amount of negativity is going to change that.

Well firstly, I would never justify my inaction by saying, "Well I acknowledge that people are dieing, but (fill in the blank) gives me hope." If anything this is part of the problem; you allow your attention to be diverted to things you think are more important, or to things that you have incidentally convinced yourself are more important. As for saying we aren't wealthy Westerners (or whatever) that use this forum, I think you can see that there is a blatant lack of perspective on your part. Even going "paycheck-to-paycheck" in Canada is a giant leap from scraping together your next meal in...wherever (Sierra Leone, So. Sudan, Ghana, blah blah). Even suggesting that we are middle class in nuance should make any Canadian sick to their stomach. As for the guy that said if you can't fix it don't, that is almost single-handedly the worst piece of advice I would ever give someone. Especially when it's clear neither of us is the bottom line on whether or not this is a fixable thing. If you're saying there is nothing we can do, that's much more pessimistic than anything I could ever post. This obviously is fixable, and your attitude is just serving to justify why you're a lazy ass.

I don't expect strangers suffering on the other side of the world to be more important to him than his children...I fully expect that, and that's why I coined it as part of the problem. If anything a better balance of attention would be better, but I suppose the original problem has to do with deciding to bring another wealthy polluting human into the world (as opposed to adoption). Here I apologize if indeed you both DID adopt...if that is the case you can forget all my criticism because you obviously aren't part of the problem. Furthermore I wouldn't define my success as a parent as being how much attention I paid to my child. So basically, you are defining your success as a parent by how much you neglect the rest of the world. I would actually define my success as a parent with the quality of attention, rather than its quantity. And even in that case, it wouldn't be suitable for me to judge that quality, since it will be pretty fucking biased.

I am not judging you, or your opinions, so don't you come in here, with your 28 posts, and tell me what I should consider more important. Read my reply to you again, you ignorant prick. I stated that I think it's horrible what's happening around the world. Every human is created equal. Is it MY problem that I was born in this country? That I was born into the "middle-class", as you put it?? I can't AFFORD to go over to Darfur and help the Black Muslims because I'm TRYING to put food on the table for my child and family. I can ONLY take care of my own. What have YOU done lately for ANYONE besides yourself? I'm sure you are a volunteer right now, of some sort. And for that, I commend you. But don't DARE judge me because my family is the most important to me. If ANYONE (Caucasian, African, East Indian, WHOMEVER) were to threaten my family, would I hesitate to defend them because the attacker has had more of a rough time in his/her life than myself?
I can't help the Black Muslims in Darfur, no more than I can help your ignorant and pestilent attitude.
