just heard that johnny carson has passed away at the age of 79..without a doubt he was the best at what he did...i would expect some emotional tributes on the late night shows this week...
he started his show business career at age 14 as the magician The Great Carsoni.
After Second World War service in the U-S navy, he took a series of jobs in local radio and T-V in Nebraska before starting at KNXT-TV in Los Angeles in 1950.
There he started a sketch comedy show, Carson's Cellar, which ran from 1951-53 and attracted attention from Hollywood.
A staff writing job for The Red Skelton Show followed.
The program provided Carson with a lucky break: When Skelton was injured backstage, Carson took the comedian's place in front of the cameras.
Producers tried him out as host of the quiz show Earn Your Vacation in 1954 and in the variety show The Johnny Carson Show in 1955 and 56.
From 1957-62 he was host of the daytime game show Who Do You Trust? and, in 1958, was joined for the first time by Ed McMahon, his durable ``Tonight Show'' buddy.
In 1958, Carson sat in for ``Tonight Show'' host Jack Paar.
When Paar left the show four years later, Carson was N-B-C's choice as his replacement.
He did the show for 30 years.

I was really saddened by that news. It was a death I was dreading. I was one of his biggest fans and thought I was the coolest ever when I would stay up to watch his show. When he did his last show, I was 18 or 19 depending on when it aired.
He will be missed.

now..i'm not a fan of leno, but i must say..what a great tribute he gave to carson tonight..his opening words on tonight's show were beautiful, touching and sincere..it brought tears to my eyes...

same here. I don't like Leno that much but he was wonderful tonight.

The new host of the late late show Craig Ferguson also had a story about his first time seeing Johnny..It was touching as well.

wasn't that a great story? class act all the way on ferguson's part..i think he'll be a pretty good host for quite some time...as for carson, i can't wait to hear what letterman has to say...too bad he's repeats all week...

Yeah I'm really glad he got the gig, I wasn't a big fan of Killborn..the best show I saw was when Ferguson popped out in the back window with a mesuring tape..that was hillarious. Good riddance Killborn.

I thought it was a nice nod by Leno to include the Letterman clip in the montage. Both guys wrote great tributes to Johnny on Sunday, and I thought Fergeson's speech was great.
They ran the "Krusty Gets Kancelled" Simpsons on most of the syndication affiliates around here yesterday. Gotta love when Johnny juggles Grampa and Jasper at the end. He really was one helluva an entertainer.
