The season was toast before it began...no surprise to cynics such as myself but a bloody great crying shame to more eager (read: hopeful) hockey fans that just yesterday, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the 1995 reconciliation, the Canes owner became the first to declare the season one dead dog.

If this drags on into next season the NHL is doomed. We'll probably end up with two or three harder-to-follow splinter leagues. That's IF it scraps the next season; that announcement is another year in the making, not even a twinkle in its daddy's eye, so anything could happen before them. I call dibs on being the first official fan if Quebec City gets a team again in the professional hockey world's newest incarnation.

As long as these players play for a (relative) small potatoes in Europe while holding the NHL hostage over $10 million a year, they'll continue to disgust and dismay me.

i dunno...if you let each side make their best proposal to each other in the manner that this guy suggests, and then have a private vote which results were made public....i think the two sides would be a lot closer than they are letting on, and then bargaining would be alot closer to a conclusion on a new deal

Nice idea, but like beanmedic said, it will never happen. The funny thing about the PA is that their interests are in serving the core group of elite (and wildly overpaid) players rather than majority of average players. So they'd never allow a vote whereby the bottom rung players opinions count just as much as the top tier players. How many times have guys like Chelios and Roenick said even if it means 10 teams (and 240 jobs) are lost because of the lockout, they'll sit tight? These guys have no problem stealing jobs in Europe or costing lesser skilled NHLers their jobs with their stance, so they'd never allow lesser skilled players a vote.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I'm sick and tired of hearing guys like Chelios and Roenick and Modano saying that solidarity is the key. These guys have enough to retire for the rest of their lives and live comfortably after a season or two. Maybe it's because they're not stars, but I don't see the players making $500,000 a season calling solidarity the key to players' victory. Maybe it's because they are the ones that stand to lose the most. The NHL is proposing to raise minimum salary even more than the PA is. The NHL is looking to maintain the league. The PA wants continued pay raises that are disproportionate to normal economic inflation despite the fact that it will cause teams to fold - and in the process eliminate players' jobs. It baffles the mind.

Very true, in regards to the NHLPA it seems like a pretty shitty union, Ive been working in a union enviroment all my working life I was in the CAW for almost five years and if anytime the union was operating that way, workers would flip. Its all about what the membership wants, the majority should rule and it should go to a secret ballot vote, because if 90% of the membership wants to play under a salary cap NHL then so be it, let the workers decide what they want, not a couple stuffed shirts and idiots like chris chelios, he sure as hell wouldnt speak for me.

Nice idea, but it makes just WAY to much sense to happen. :roll:

I agree with everyone's comments regarding the union... I have NO sympathy for the players whatsoever... but the owners need to step up and think of some creative ways to share revenues like they do in the NFL. I don't know how they'd do it without the large TV revenues NFL enjoys, but surely there's a way to do it. Basically both sides need to give in order for something to happen... unfortunately that looks as likely to happen as hell freezing over. :rambo:
