I burned a Hip CD for a guy in Australia who's never heard them before...The Tragically Hip - Volume One.

Here's how I came into contact with this guy, it's an email he sent me...

"Billy, hi. Sorry 'bout the confusion! I gathered you started the
circulation of this show from a reading of the set listing at dbEtree
(or however they spell it!).

A copy came into my hands, I've applied [tisdu] to it which gives it a
bigger sound, and I'd like to send you a copy since you started the
travels of this music.

Anyways, I did get the disc and it sounds great. In one of our emails, I asked him if he's heard of The Hip, to which he stated he had heard of them, but never actually heard them. I asked him if he'd be interested in something by them, and he said absolutely.

Here's the CD I burned for him. I found this a fairly challenging thing to do because there were so many different approaches I could have taken with it. It could have been songs that are more popular, or early Hip, or latter Hip, or my favorite songs...on and on. I finally just stopped thinking about it so much and I started going cd to cd and ripping songs as the inspiration struck me. I figured if I named it "Volume One" it keeps the door open for subsequent ones.

Well I listened to most of it last night and on the way to work today...it flows very nice. The only change I should have made was to put Escape at the very end...it just seems like a closing song.

Are We Family followed by Daddy is fantastic...try it.

The only other song I had burned for this but had to cut was Sherpa.

I think this was a mix of some of my favorite songs as well as songs that are fantastic but maybe don't get enough recognition. Perhaps the next one will be a most popular volume.

good mix to get someone into the hip but I find that some of the darker (fc, dfn) stuff loses something when it's not heard in the context of the rest of the album.

having said that, after vol. 1 this guy'll be ordering full albums from anywhere he can...

It looks like a pretty good sampling of Hip tunes but as

It's only an opinion, but I believe the evolution of sound and composition is an important factor in what makes The Hip so hip.

The most important thing though is that you're working to develop fans half-way around the world.

I would have put Sharks on for an Australian -- that way when, of course, the dorsal fin is closing in, he knows who he's gotta outswim.
