Hipbase,

As I was watching TV the other night, I flipped past another mindless materialistic MTV program. Aside from the bouncing bikini babes and idiot jocks parading around, something troubled me. One of these 20-something bourgoise white bread morons shouted: "Canada, that's like America's suburb! Huh huh huh."

Well, as an American, I would like to issue a formal apology, and sincerely hope that you guys up there don't think that all of us are like that.

I love and respect Canada's unique culture, socialism, music, economy and military. My mother is from Quebec, and I respect you to the 'enth degree.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think the majority of us couldn't care less what the U.S. thinks of us.
If we did care, our military would be at war right now and the Hip would be freaking out that they aren't as popular in the States. Tongue

Don't worry about it, Mick. Obviously the person on MTV is not as well-educated as you are.

Sometimes people are just dumb. You try to educate them, but there's nothing else you can do about it.

It could be worse... when Americans think of Canada and Canadians, it's generally positive.

Trust me I've heard worse. It's not your job to apologize for all of them. If it was you would never get a break. Plus we can hold our own. I know I've said some pretty negative things about them also.Thanks for the apology anyway. Smile

I read something somewhere (or maybe I hallucinated it, which is entirely possible) that more Canadians can name American states and their capitals than Americans that can name Canadian provinces/territories and their capitals.... Kinda funny seeing though there are more American states than Canadian provinces.... and we're neighbours.... or maybe it's just a hint to the oh-so-vastness of the average American's knowledge of other countries? Or America's information more readily spread across the globe as opposed to information on other countries?

As a joke, it's funny; "Canada's an American suburb".
But I can start saying "America is Canada's evil twin."
And I find that pretty funny...

I'd even put that on a t-shirt.

Americans are basically taught about there country and the "good" things it has done. In school they only spend a tiny bit of time talking about the countrys mistakes. How can they not be repeated if you never learn about them??? Who cares about the rest of the world too they dont matter when you are The SUPER POWER. gag

I have to strongly dispute this, it is so far from the truth as I've experienced it that it needs correcting. In high school our history classes focused alot on Wounded Knee and our conflict with the Native American tribes; alot of the material focused on our greed and the "manifest destiny" idea that caused the conflict to occur. We also had a section about dropping the atomic bomb on Nagaski and Hiroshima and had to write a paper whether or not dropping the bomb was justified and the reasons why we thought it was justified. I'm pretty sure Canadian high school history classes look at the Metis and the things white Canadians did to them, I just want to make it clear that we do teach about the mistakes we've made in the past, just like everyone else.

Well I went to high school near Pittsburgh,Pa and they didn't. Sorry but I was speaking from my experience and the experiences of my friends and family in both country's.
