Why didn’t any other team figure it out first?

The Sudbury Wolves came up with the formula to finally beat the London Knights on Friday. Just take five regulars out of your lineup, take away the team’s head coach, give a few other regulars the flu and call up three 16-year-old rookies.

The Wolves ended London’s 31-game unbeaten streak, beating the Knights 5-3 before 9,096 shocked fans at the John Labatt Centre in London. The unbeaten streak is a new CHL record.

The Knights themselves were short three starters to the Canadian and U.S. national junior teams.

But that paled in comparison to the odds the Wolves faced. They were a depleted bunch Friday night after a line brawl at the end of the second period of Thursday night’s game in Windsor against the Spitfires.


Suspended for a minimum of two games are Wolves defencemen Marc Staal and Adam McQuaid, forwards Zack Stortini, Alex Eaton and Devin DiDiomete, as well as Wolves head coach/GM Mike Foligno.

He received an automatic two-game suspension because DiDiomete came off the bench to join the melee.

Three Windsor Spitfires — Iain McPhee, Steve Downie and David Lomas — were also suspended for their actions during the brawl.

The final suspensions should be handed down Monday, OHL referee-in-chief Ted Baker said from his Toronto office Friday.

“It’s a preliminary review at this point,” he said. “The league hasn’t been able to view the video yet, but based on discussion with the supervisor and referee assigned to the game (Ryan O
’Neill), we have been painted a picture.”

Baker said he doesn’t want to rush to judgment until he gets all the facts.

“I would suggest any time we have multiple altercations on the same stoppage there is a concern,” he said.

“But sometimes when you have this type of situation it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be, though sometimes it is. So we’ll have to see the tape and review it from there.”

Foligno said his players were standing up for each other, and added he didn’t think O’Neill had a very good handle on the game.

“It’s obviously not a good situation, but we have to deal with it,” he said before Friday’s huge win in London. “Unfortunately ... Devin DiDiomete left the bench and was suspended for that, too, and when a player leaves the bench, the coach gets suspended, too.”

Foligno called up three players the Wolves took in the 2004 OHL priority selection to join the team for the rest of the weekend. Back for his second stint of the season is forward Bill Kueneman, along with winger Keaton Turkeiwicz and defenceman Trevor Erdie.

Yes, and while that was quite an achievement, that will be all that Sudbury does this year, while London will go on to win the OHL and Memorial Cup.
