Supreme Court Okay's Gay Marriage Canada Wide - Stephen Dame - 12-09-2004

Been waiting for this one a long time, seems like forever ago when the first provincial court decision came down. A good day for justice, equality and the seperation of church and state.

Any nation can talk about equality and minority rights, but unless you're willing to back it up with law, it's just that: talk.

If only we could follow in your footsteps Sad

Anyway, that is awesome news :thumb:

Took so long because the government asked for a reference on the case. If they wanted to back up the talk, they should have just passed the law.

The next interesting bit will be the vote itself. Who is for it and who is against it.

Yep. A real Liberal leader would have settled this already and moved on. So we'll see how Brian Mulroney in Red handles it...

I don't see a problem with NDP, Bloq and Ms. Stronach's support, the question is Paul's fellow pseudo-Conservatives like Roger Galloway. Based on current math it should pass though.

This is awesome news. Ralph Klein must be absolutely fuming over this. I can't wait to see the pain and frustration on his face when he gives his next press conference. Didn't he say a little while back that if gay marriage were okayed across Canada, he'd fight Ottawa to the death to get it overturned in Alberta?

- skippy the wonder dog - 12-09-2004

The prospect of Klein fighting to the death is not uninviting....

As for Klein and his way of thinking, If he were running for another term, I wouldn't doubt for a second his use of the Notwithstanding clause.

I really don't think he, or his supporters, would have any trouble being remembered as the Western Bourassa. But given the current climate, I think he lets this one go...

But the more I think about the Fed situation, the more I'm worried.

In general, the Canadian electorate prefers the genuine article to half measures.

Red-Tory Joe Clark couldn't compete with real Liberal Pierre Trudeau. Blue-Grit John Turner couldn't match actual Tory Brian Mulroney. If Paul can't get this one through, he'll look weak and wishy washy compared to Stephen Harper, who at least stuck to his wishy-washy "Free Vote" guns over this one.

If Martin and crew half-ass this vote, they could find themselves on the other side of the House next Fall. Somebody in the PMO should be digging up Jean Chretien's whip as we speak...

I can see the Next leader of the PCs in Alberta making this an election issue, and then promise to invoke the notwithstanding clause. Its a good way for them to probably increase their vote after losing some support in the last election.

As for Martin, I dont think he is going to allow a totally free vote. He will whip his cabinet and secretary ministers. So that coupled with the NDP, the Bloc (minus the few who dont support it), and a few conservatives they would have enough votes to get it through.

Uh, you I guess. If it can work for Apu and his wife, it can work for us. I'll see you at 8.

I have to retract my previous post. Alberta cannot use the notwithstanding clause against the definition of marriage. The SC gave that power to the federal government and thus is out of Alberta's jurisdiction.
