winter blues - Lizard King - 12-03-2004

Anybody suffer from this? Im not a big fan of winter myself, growing up in Canada Im used to long cold winters, bad roads and lots of stress. When I was younger I spent many winters playing road hockey for hours and hours, playing ice hockey and going to school, but as I got older winter became less fun, no more road hockey, no more ice hockey and full time work became my life. Its not so much the cold that bothers me, I can take it, but for the last 4 years my job was 30 mins away in St.Mary's, and it was shift work, so Id be driving through the horrible snow belt of sw ontario, in the early mornings and in the middle of the night, and let me tell you the stress was awful, for me and my wife. But this year I made a career change so no more driving in storms to get to work, I finally got a job in London and this winter I am much more upbeat with the bad weather looming, but I still find myself getting a little down, my hockey career long over, I hate skiing, the NHL gone Cry and I dont make snowmen anymore (Im in an apartment). But this year I joined a gym so hopefully that will keep me going strong, I play indoor ball hockey on thursdays, and I like my new job and maybe just maybe the NHL will come back, well so far its looking alot better than last year. Hopefully the days of winter blahs, feeling down and gaining weight are behind me. Anybody out there in Hipbase land have these same feelings? What sort of things do you do to keep upbeat and busy during the winter months? Anybody hate winter, have a bad/good story to tell? Id like to know how my fellow canucks cope with the cold, you too in the USA I havent forgotten its cold there too! :wink: well in some parts anyway.

well when you have lived in Winnipeg all your life you learn to cope with winter fast....seeing as it lasts for about 8 months here Tongue
The way I stay sane during winter is just hanging out with friends...even if we just rent movies, have some drinks and play some games, or whatever. In Winnipeg you have to make your own fun or you're a goner :lol:
We also take advantage of the days when there isn't a severe windchill warning and venture out in the snow. Nothing is funnier then watching adults trying to relive their youth by toboggining or having a snowball fight. It may sound kind of lame but when you live with the snow for so long here you have to make peace and find some use for it all :o

A couple of years back I discovered the perfect cure for the winter blues: a backyard rink...now I pray for -10 (Celsius) nights and sub-zero days...:lol:

It's funny how such a project can totally warp your mindset... :wink:

Good topic, working out definitely..Take advantage of any sunlight you can too. Here in Alberta, Calgary specifically, I hope for Chinook winds, I remember about 7 years back a friend from BC came up and we went out to the bar. Well it was -25 c, too nippy, anyways we woke up with a hangover but it was about 10 c and all the snow was melting. So in 8 hours the temp had rose 35 c. Other than that, find something new and exciting to shake up the routine.

I love winter. Like you said I'm use to it. Never really had the winter blues.I always stay active either snow boarding or ice skating. I can't wait for snow. We had flurries but not much else this morning. Hopefully it'll snow soon.

I like the calm winter brings. You can stroll downtown Toronto at 1am on a Wednesday night and literally be the ONLY person on the street... something about walking under a bright moon, on a snowy night, and "owning" the city has always had a romance in it for me.

Plus, I can build a snow fort that'd make you run home to mommy.

I'll take winter over summer that's for sure.

Winter Rules!!

Bring on the snow, let it pile up. I've loved winter for as long as I can remember. I'm not sure how old I was when my parents threw me on a pair of skis, 2 or 3, and I've been adicted to skiing ever since. I crave for deep powder, such an incredible experience skiing in deep powder.

I'd be out there right now if it wasn't for the wife's Christmas party we've got to get going to. Ahh well, looks like a good forecast for snow this week, so next weekend should be good. Can't wait. :thumb:

The transition from winter in the mid-atlantic to winter in Syracuse was pretty difficult. My freshman year at SU, I was miserable. Last year, things were a little bit better...probably because I didn't have to walk two miles to class at 7 am (I sound like someone's cranky grandfather, I know). This winter has been amazingly mild thus far. We haven't really had any accumulation as of yet. The wind is what kills me though. I think I'll be staying in for the rest of the weekend.

I love to snowmobile. Both my wife and I have them and we go every weekend with the kids. They love it...go out into the woods, start a fire, roast weiners, drink hotchocolate, have a grand ol time. AND...during the week I ride with my buddies and many of them partake in the activities LD mentioned...I just got a MP# player to listen to while I ride, I'm loading it up as we speak.
