Anybody have a Creative MuVo Slim 256MB MP3 Player? I can't afford an Ipod and this looks like a pretty good deal at $99

I'm sure the Ipod is probably the best on the market; that and the storage capacity is why they're practically cost-prohibitive for many of us. As for the other players that are available, many of them are indeed worth the investment, but you'll need to determine that based on your specific needs or expectations.

First, determine how much music (how many tunes) you'd want at any given time. A 256 MB player will hold about 50 tunes, give or take, depending on the file size. Killerwhaletank, Double Suicide, and many other live versions of NOIS are two to three times the size of standard album tracks in MP3 format.

I always research and compare products before I make a purchase. I suggest you start with the c|net MP3 Buyer's Guide and go from there.

When you've identified the capabilities you must have, would like to have, and don't need, compare some of the product reviews (both from the editors and the users) and choose the products that most closely match what you're looking for in a portable digital player. Understand that user reviews are individual opinions which may vary greatly based in the reviewer's expectations and the editors' opinions may be biased by manufacturer's incentives; the only absolute source for unbiased product reviews is Consumer Reports which requires a paid subscription. It may be worth the $4.95 cost for a month's subscription if you want truly objective, consumer-focused information.

After you have a few models in mind, hit Google and search those products in "Groups", which will give you a somewhat more reasonable perspective (from newsgroups posts) on user experience.

It will take you a little time, but you'll feel comfortable and confident in your purchase.
