"Night is For Getting" Thoughts -
Stephen Dame - 12-02-2004
Figured it could use it's own thread as folks begin to get ahold of it.
To me, it's the rant set to music, not a complete song. It doesn't seem to
go anywhere, and it's obvious why it was left off the album: there's just no
spark. It's an accurate depiction of "not trying to hide the lights" or the
way Gord often refers to "the process," but it deserved to be cut.
And as cfernehy mentioned earlier, it's kind of a blatant cash grab from the new management as opposed to the free IVL releases through Hip Club.
This song just doesn't cut it for me.

I don't know how many times I've listened to it, but i absolutely love it...i don't feel like rehashing my post from the other thread but i do wish this was left on the album.
Don't you think releasing those 2 singles and having ppl pay for those, and then releasing the cd and having ppl pay for that was also a cash grab. Not that it really bothers me,
Sure it was but at least we are getting new stuff to listen to, and really I can't complain about 99 cents, if i didn't like the song it might be another matter, but I love it, and do hope they release more b sides, either through I tunes or the Hip club, I don't care at this point, the more hip i have to listen to the better

Yes.
How is it any different then when a band releases and actual hard copy single?

At first I thought I downloaded "On The Verge" by mistake.

Ha!
Although the twangy guitar work is growing on me, I'll still take OTV over this anyday.

I think the difference here (worth debating anyway) is that when a band releases a CD single, you can play it on every CD player out there. But when a band (or, more appropriately, the band's management) decides to release an exclusive track through iTunes, or Puretracks (and in Canada only), they are eliminating a lot of the market and those fans feel shut out. In this case US fans don't (legally) have access to the song, nor do those without credit cards. Those without iPods have to burn the track to a CD and rip it back to WMA or MP3 if they want to listen to it on their digital music player.
It's an unfortunate byproduct of being at the birth stage of an entirely new industry and an entirely new paradigm, but right now the digital music download market is not working in the best interest of all fans, only those who happen to be on their platform and happen to live in the right country. :thumb:

I am at work right now reading this and am definitely looking forward to buying this one. I had no idea this was being released. It is nice to be surprised with news like this. I don't know what the fuss about 99 cents is about, heck that is like 5 Chicken McNuggets, and a Hip song is much better than chicken!
Thoughts to come!!

Ever noticed that nothing that has been released via retail channels (ie. CDs or livedownloads) is ever distributed through here......Why do you think this would be any different.

Well the song hasn't grown on me yet after 5 or 6 listens, that's not to say that it won't, but it certainly isn't like Makeshift and Josephine for me. I knew halfway through the first play that I would love those songs.
But I must say that I do like the idea of having a new Hip song to listen to, and 0.99 isn't gonna break the bank. I can see how some can be opposed to this whole notion of paying for singles when some used to be released for free. But in my eyes this is a case of "everyone else is cashing in on it, so why shouldn't we?" Good for you boys....keep em' coming.

Simply not true. When Pure Tracks was releasing stuff exclusively in Canada for 99cents, many of us helped out international fans with the tracks.
It's only been a few hours, and computer cave-men like me can't figure out how to break the license... but give it time, and everybody will be able to hear it soon enough.

truly Stephen is a king among men..or at least among Hipbasers.
btw, i wonder if this means Fighter Fighter, and the other left over will be released son.

sorry I didn't mean that for people that can't buy it, I meant it purely in general that you won't see it showing up on the tracker or the ftp.
But I mean he lives in Canada and its 99 cents, he can easily get the track. It will take more than a dollars worth of effort to crack the licensing....

ISCLAIMER:: My intent is not to be the greedy creep of the board.
Well Stephen, I'd let you know, but the song isn't available on my version of iTunes. If any kind souls would be willing to pass it on to me, I'd be forever grateful.
