Hip entertains Grey Cup fans

OTTAWA (CP) -- The Tragically Hip gave the 92nd Grey Cup's halftime show a solid dose of Canadiana, delivering a two-song set to the rocking sellout crowd.

Led by frontman Gord Downie, clad in a black t-shirt and sporting a thick layer of stubble, the Hip warmed up the 51,242 fans at Frank Clair Stadium with Gus: The Polar Bear from Central Park and followed with an inspired rendition of Courage.

Renowned for his excellent showmanship, Downie was particularly energetic, hopping around the stage while his bandmates played.

A lucky few were allowed to stand in front of the midfield stage, where they shared space with the cheerleaders from both teams. The fans clapped their hands in the air, bodysurfed and sang along with gusto.

Fireworks streamed into the air after their final note.

The quintet from nearby Kingston, Ont., arguably the country's most popular band, has sold over six million albums in Canada and captured 11 Juno awards.

R&B singer Keshia Chante, 16, sang O Canada before her hometown crowd.

I didn't have the privilege of seeing the show live, but I saw it on TV... and they were outstanding! I was especially excited with how Gus sounded. It is one of my favourites from IBE, but when I downloaded the show they did on Canada Day this year from LiveDownloads, I was disappointed with how the live version sounded. But there was no question this time it totally rocked!
