I can imagine the horrified expressions on the faces of CBC and other national TV personnel knowing Fox is making inroads to the canadian viewing public...
OTTAWA (CP) - An all-news network that has taken no end of glee in dismissing Canadians as craven wussies while offering a platform to right-wing ideologues and red-meat Republicans is coming to a cable station near you.
The rambunctious Fox News Channel has been given sanction to beam into living rooms north of the U.S. border - good news for more than 500 individuals and groups that lobbied the national broadcast regulator to make room for its particular brand of bombastic coverage.
Even though Fox News hosts have at times mocked Canadians - calling the former prime minister a bum - the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission said Thursday it has found “there is substantial demand in Canada for Fox News.”

I welcome it. Our former Prime Minister WAS a bum, and I defended their right to say so just as I defended one of his aides calling Bush a "moron" off the record.
Too many times we have to settle for 10-second clips on the Jon Stewart show to encapsulate what cylinders are misfiring in the "brains" of FOX folks. I can't wait to see it for myself, not unlike a particularly spectacular train wreck you can't help but rubberneck at.

Here comes big burly, tanned, crew-cut men (exempt Bill O'Reilly) and bimbo blondes pontificating the news, with cameras, lighting, etc that makes everyone look as un-human as the centre-fold of a fashion magazine. Ahh hell, at least its entertaining.
Makes me really apreciate the CBC. Its got...style. Oh yeah, and whats that other word......

But no money and no sex appeal (maybe Adrienne Arsenault)...they're doomed. FOX is gonna steamroll right over them. CBC is going to have to start airing Bleu Nuit to make money :lol:
And I for one will welcome the change...we need an English version. I'm so tired of the intricate plotlines of Bleu Nuit features being lost on me because I can't understand the dense, literate dialogue.

To answer your question...YES.. but hey the ignorant deserve to have something flashy and visibly edible so they can swallow what the Idiot Box deems as news, and Fox can provide that. You can't get that from the CBC, they always try and cloud things with balance and facts.

I believe you discovered the key to why Fox steamrolled CBS and ABC here in the states, who in their right mind finds Babba Wawa and Gunga Dan sexy? :lol:

FOX News is just as ignorant as our CBC, just at the other end of the political spectrum. It will be nice to hear crap from more than one source - only difference is the new one isn't funded by the government.

The CBC is not a part of the profit-driven concentrated mess of privatised media which solely represents corporate agendas. And at least the CBC is mandated to provide a variety of views for different regions and locales within Canada.....which is more than I can say for the top 9 media conglomerates that present you with endless variations of reality TV, sitcoms and crime dramas just to sell audiences to advertisers. :?
And if you are looking for an alternative source of news, 'crap' is all you will be getting from FOX news, one-sided conservative 'crap' that you can get from any other privatised media network.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this just a 24 hour broadcasted news channel a la CNN? Of course their vision is slightly skewed due to the ownership, but I can't see a whole lot of Canadians spitting out an extra $4.00 a month for a 24-hour news channel when most are probably satisfied with CNN or down-right fed up with the US mass-market news channels. The CBC may be lacking in presentation compared to FOX, but all in all when I watch the news I don't expect light shows and fireworks. On occasion I have watched FOX2 Detroit news, and as pathetic as the content is, I personally find the whole presentation tacky. I'm surprised they even had to fight to get it broadcast in Canada; don't cable and satellite providers have the option of broadcasting the Al-Jazeer (or whatever its called) channel? In my mind thats a little more risque...

They had to pass through the normal regulatory process to broadcast in Canada. Whether they had to "fight" to get into the Canadian market is open to question. Certainly, Fox and its advocates like to claim they had to fight against Canada's leftist media culture, etc., but anyone who takes that at face value....
I doubt the CBC is frightened -- CTV and Global will be more likely to lose viewers to Fox than CBC will, since CBC news viewers are less likely to buy Fox's spin or presentation.

Hahaha... I agree... but Ive had people tell me in my broadcasting policy classes that they would rather watch FOX because it is conservative and American TV has better Ads...

Yes.. broadcasters were granted a license to broadcast Al-Jazeera (i think it was a Montreal broadcaster) but the CRTC put SO many ridiculous restrictions and regulations on the feed that many believe it is not even worth airing now (not a direct feed)
As for FOX... I'm pretty sure that lobbyists for the major private broadcasters in Canada have been fighting to keep FOX away because of the potential competition and further fragmentation of the market

Well, I think they were right to put some restrictions on what Al-Jazeera broadcasts because they are known to use footage and commentary that is underhanded, very graphic and a distortion of the facts. American and Canadian news generally doesnt broadcast pictures of Iraqi dead who were killed in combat and exult about their death or air propaganda pieces promising death and destruction for infidels, etc. Western journalism isnt perfect but there is a broad range of publicly aired viewpoints across the political spectrum. The voices of moderation and compromise are forced underground in the Arab media, especially when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

I would beg to differ on a couple of those points...the American media was all too proud to show off the Hussein sons' bodies. Not that they didn't deserve it, the evil cretins, but to Middle Easterners it looks like the same thing.
And don't forget, 20 times a day each network DOES air propaganda promising death and destruction for the enemy. The only different is instead of being masked figures with guns, these warriors wear suits and smiles as they proclaim victory over the opposition. And that "Mission Accomplished" speech well over a year ago is starting to seem as ludicrous as Comical Ali's pronouncements that the Americans would never take Baghdad and would burn in their tanks, considering that these many moons later there are entire provinces deemed unsafe for troops and major offenses are still being launched. No, I'm not saying the Americans leaders are as EVIL as the militants...but they're just as misguided in what they believe and how to go about achieving it.
I'm not pretending to be a fan of the network, I'm just saying that through VERY coloured lenses, we might lose sight of certain equities between the political/military propaganda on both sides.

You've got a point, with regards to how it looks to Arabs, but I have to point out what is missing from Al-Jazeera and other Arab news media is any form of debate or dissension about Saddam's atrocities, the supression of free speech in public life. We see such discussion and disagreement all the time in western public life and it hasnt killed us. Our societies have debated and agonized in public about My Lai and a whole host of mistakes and survived as a country. My feeling is the Arab news media and their political masters refuse to look inside and see the things they have done wrong and use Israel and Western mistakes as excuses to avoid acknowledging mistakes.
