Digital Camera settings - the_wheat_king - 11-20-2004

Hey all,

I'm bringing my digital camera to the shows and I was wondering what settings I should be using to get great quality shots?

Any websites or links from this site would help...thanks

My camera is Panasonic 3.2mp, 3x optical zoom

I personaly just leave mine on 'Auto"!!! (with the flash setting to red eye)

Well I have had the experience of two cameras.

Kodak CX6200 - VERY basic. I have to leave the zoom off, rendering it useless, and using the flash the pictures are crystal clear. No options really.

Just used a Sony Cyber-Shot last night in Calgary. I used the "nighttime" setting, along with others, and it worked the best. I am not well versed in digital photogrpahy. At the Whiskey I used the Kodak, and at the Saddledome I used the Sony.

I've gotten good results with semi-dark by using a Portrait setting, and just a regular flash... Make sure you focus on a light or something to get the right focus (ie. not of the heads in front of you, but the stage)... That's what's worked the best for me...

Getting a great shot is very difficult with most cameras. Like everyone else said....auto or night modes are probably the best. Unless you want a shot without flash, then you can try manual mode if you have it.
This is what I would suggest: set to manual, turn the flash off, zoom out, set the aperture to max (smallest number), set the shutter speed to 1/50 or 1/30 if you have a steady hand, and make sure you focus on Gord.

A lot of these shots were in manual without flash. I just think using flash doesn't capture the mood of the concert. But as you can see the pictures aren't great. Of course being 5 feet from the stage helps.

Someone suggested actually using the flash but putting a piece of scotch tape over it. This would essentially "filter" the flash so that you don't get such a harsh light from one source. I have never tried this and typically (if I can get close enough) I use some manual settings on my Nikon Coolpix 4300. But if your camera has a "night portrait" or "museum" setting, those work the best. I must warn you though, without the flash, you need a steady hand, especially to catch Gord in some of his finer moments.

That's for sure. I took most of mine on the weekend without the flash. Lot of blurry shots. Might have a couple good ones out of the bunch that I took. I'll check them later tonight.

I found that the secret to success is this:
Shoot as fast as possible (most digitals only go to 400 speed)
NO FLASH, ever!
Shoot in manual mode, and, most cameras should have an adjustment called exposure compensation (E.V.), this should be set to -0.6, or as low as it will go. What this prevents is spotlit areas from bleaching out.
Lastly, avoid shooting under red spot lights, red fools most cameras most of the time. Hope this helps.

Good point, I forgot about the ISO setting. Especially if you are in manual because it might default to iso 50. ISO 400 will be grainy but it might be the only way to get a decent pic without flash.
