Remember the Edmund Fitzgerald - scottitude - 11-10-2004

I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet...today is the 29th anniversary of the wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

She was an ore-hauler, heavy with 26,918 long tons of iron ore (taconite) pellets. She was bound for the steel mills of Zug island, just off Detroit.

I remember it every time I hear Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck". Even though the song is a cliche, it predated the Perfect Storm movie by 25 years and the image of 29 men struggling vainly against the forces of nature is as powerful now as it was then.

An absolutely fascinating site loaded with info and charts about the conditions...

In the Ottawa '96 show there is 'The Wreck of the Low Income Housing' in the middle of The Hundredth Meridian... it doesn't quite capture the imagery as well as the Fitzgerald, but it sure is a humourous rendition about another tragic situation in Ontario while Mike Harris was giving everything he had to fix Ontario's deficit.

"The baby screamed from the highchair on down to the mom thats crouched in the kitchen,
At 7PM the stove-top caved in, she said baby there's no food to serve you"

JERRY: (Gives Elaine a look) No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship.

ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.

Hey all,

I'm a history teacher, and this is my favorite subject. I've also wreck dived a 1/2 dozen great lakes wrecks. But sort of an Edmund Fitz Groupie. In honor of her demise, I gave my Senior class a lecture on her. None of them had really heard of her down here in Kansas, but my boys enjoyed it.

What show does Gord break into the "Fitz"? I'd kill to hear it.

In Grade 5 (way back in 1987) we learned this song, and everyone had to do a project on a component that contributed to the sinking of the ship - weather, buoyancy, orienteering, etc... To this day I can sing the song word-for-word.

Gordon Lightfoot wrote a masterpiece of a song, but how many in here prefer the Rheostatics version of Wreck? I find it a more haunting, spooky remebrance

The Rheostatics did a version? Can I get a copy?

I guess a few free divers using a special 6 gas mixture reached the wreck in 98, but could only spend 8 minutes on the bottom.

At the Nov. '96 Cobo Hall LBU show so the Rheo's rendition of brought me running from the beer line to see what the hell was happening in the arena. Between the roar of the crowd and the somber but powerful drone that was bulding like a thunder-clap, I was certain The Hip had come on.

They made the song their own so well that I didn't quite realize what they were playing until the second verse. Blew me away. I remember my buddy and me starin' open-mouthed at each other, incredulous that they were covering Lightfoot with even more emotion than his original.

I ordered the Rheo's live CD the next day. One of my favorite non-Hip discs, even though the CD version isn't the same as the one they played at Cobo
