The hip almost got me in trouble at Wal Mart!!! - thipfan73 - 11-06-2004
So I went to the local super Wal Mart. I walk in and the security alarm goes off!!!!!
I was SHOCKED!
I had the same thing happen while I was downstate visiting David's family. I figured it was the fact I was carrying around my IVL CD because I brought it last minute with me for the trip.
So, the lady at the door at Wal-Mart looks at me kinda weird. I say "it's probably my CD". I walk through the door again with and without the CD and it's the stupid CD. I prove to her I didn't steal it because it's got a water ring on it and it's rather beat up and it's got autographs in it.
She tells me to have it deactivated at the register.
so I go on my way and I shop. While I'm shopping and I worry. What if they think I stole this CD from their store.
I realize I have a way to prove it. I could play it for them and it's got the word FUCK in it at least once or twice. SOOOOOO. Usually Wal-Mart censors the stuff they sell!!!! LOL!!!
They don't give me any trouble at the register but I found it to be a rather interesting story, specially since I bought the cd in JANUARY and I walked out of the Sam Goody I bought it at and it didn't set off THEIR ALARM!!!!

:lol: That reminds me of a time I had to be 'searched' (this was at a department store also) because I had a cd from my own cd store in my bag.
hock: It had our label on it and everything, but the censors we use can't be deactivated. I hated being treated like I was a thief :what :what

Gawd that's awful. I realized when I was looking at the CD the other day, that it's still got the little security thingee inside of the case and I mean INSIDE the case like in the jewel case under the CD.

What ya gotta do next time that happens is: Stop, look wide-eyed at the greeter, and then take off in a sprint, screaming, arms flailing into the parking lot!
When the crack Wal-security team catches up to you, simply explain that alarms make you "skittish."

Remember that you have rights, if you are falsely accused of theft and publicly embarressed you can sue, or at least threaten too.
I used to work in a grocery store and once our "floorwalker" stopped someone because he had thought she had stole. After going through her bags and finding nothing, she proceeded to ask for his managers name and the security company that he worked for. Next day he was fired and she had a couple hundred dollars in gift certificates in her hand to keep her from sueing the store.

The security at WalMart can be downright ugly. When I worked in their offices, they used to give EVERYBODY a thorough hashing. It was shameful. One time this guy who had to be 80, cane and all, walked out the door with something, and his daughter, who was escorting him, said he had early stage Alzheimer's. I heard through the door the threats being made against him. I heard his daughter saying "Please don't ban him, he comes here all the time and he won't remember to stay away, and you guys will end up arresting him for trespassing." Talk about a power trip.

That really breaks my heart to read. My grandfather and grandmother both had Alzheimer's, and I remember me and my parentsgoing through similar episodes with them. I can't believe that someone would treat another person so harshly, especially after the situation has been explained.

I'm sorry to hear someone you know has endured that, Jenna. I have seen it all...they say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but I think a little authority is a dangerous thing.
I as diplomatic as people get. I don't blow up in people's faces. And yet I was once thrown out of a bar - dragged, literally, from my seat - by a female bouncer on a power trip who pushed me and pushed me and pushed me until I told hewr to mind her own business, which she was waiting for, to use as justification for getting 10 of her goon budies to do the dirty work.
Also, being a security guard, I see other guards who think they're the Scret Service. The aviator sunglasses-wearing macho pricks who think because they have a radio and pepper spray, they can throw people up against walls and yell at people who are barely afoul of the regulations. What's even sadder is how they take out their agression on immigrants, kids, the elderly, and generally people who can't defend themselves. It really sickens me sometimes.

That is horrible! My Paternal Grandmother basically died from Alzheimer's. She was under my Aunt's care in Arizona and wandered off and drowned. My Maternal Grandmother is going through it right now and it's getting to the point she is going to be in a nursing home soon. My entrie family on both sides has Alzheimer's just laying in wait and has done terrible things to people I love. I hope they find a cure for it. It's a horrible disease.

I'm no lawyer but I did 20 minutes of research...
Ask the guard if he is arresting you (yes they can make citizen's arrests on the property of the store.) Make him commit to making the arrest. (If it turns out that its a false arrest... he could be in trouble as described above.)
Not under arrest? Keep walking. If he touches you without arresting you, that's assault. If he is arresting you, yes he can use reasonable force (and I think the law says he has to physically touch you to arrest you.)

I guess the exception would be if they are truly concerned that you have a weapon or something.

similar thing happened to me at walmart once, i had a burnt cd in an old case, and the case had a bar cod sticky thing on it and set off the alarm...

I had a similar experience while at an HMV. As a student who rides the bus I carry my backpack to carry groceries and what nit when I go shopping. While I was proceeding back through the mall I stopped in to HMV to look for som Hip singles (which often pop up), and of course the alarm went off as I was leaving. Having a back pack I knew I was gonna be hassled. The guy was a dick at first, he told me to walk back through and the alarm didnt go off. It is still very embarassing.
Those barcode sticky things are easy to remove. You can pull apart the cd case without damaging it and simply peel it off. I do that with every cd/dvd I buy.

I think sometimes things just pick up a charge. I had the same thing happen to me in university, and the guy at HMV asked me if I had any university textbooks in my bag, as they usually set them off for some reason......

What I love doing though is putting the sensors that I remove in my brothers shoe and my sisters purse.
