Greatest Hits CD/Box Set...should we buy it? - chives - 10-28-2004
Word on the radio is that U2 is preparing a box set with all their cds being reissued, with about 25 new songs that have never been released. Apparently, there is some negative backlash to this idea from their fans, accusing them of selling out (I guess so, did anyone see the ipod commercial?). Anyways, its a given that the Hip's next cd will be a "greatest hits". Would anyone actually buy it if it doesn't contain any new stuff, or should we have to buy it to get the new material? What are you thoughts??

I'll buy The Hip's Greatest Hits - just to be a completist.
I have a feeling that the U2 package will be very expensive, and as such, I'll just order it from iTunes for $50 (as per the iPod/iTunes/U2 web commercial).

As long as it includes unreleased tracks (as has been mentioned by some of the band members), I'll definitely buy it.

If you buy it and sell all your other U2 albums on eBay, you should be able to recoup more than a quarter of the cost!

Like the others, I would have to buy it just to have it, but surely there will be some b-sides or unreleased material. Im sure we all can pretty much guess what songs will be on a Hip greatest hits album, if they just put down 18 or 20 of the hits off the albums I wont listen to it anyway, Id rather make my own on my comp. Id rather see them do a box set of all albums plus a bonus disk with unreleased material or live stuff, like Oasis did with their Masterplan album. Seeing as how most fans have all the albums anyway that probably wont happen, Id rather just have the rareties disk. U2 shouldnt even bother, they already did it with the 2 greatest hits albums, enough is enough, just release the unheard material. I have all their cds anyway. :jump

U2 are a great band but there is no question they have given fans plenty of reasons to label them "sellouts". I don't love that term and I think maybe it's alright if a band just looks to make the most money. A lot of people would do the same. I think Moby said something like "it's not selling out if the art is good". Maybe he's right. Having said that, I do consider U2 sellouts and think they would do anything for money but they are still a great band.
I think greatest hits packages are pathetic but it sounds like the record company is forcing the Hip to release one so their hands are tied. I'm not sure if I would buy it unless there was a substantial number of unreleased tracks on it.

Record companies include "Greatest Hits" albums in contracts because they are cheap to produce, which yields greater profits. I can't think of a band that publically wanted to put out a Greatest Hits album instead of an album of new material.

I dont think the Hip even need to put out a greatest hits album, all there albums are greatest hits as far as Im concerned. :thumb:

~Exactly L.King if I was asked to compose a "Greatest Hits" I don't think I could for them. There are far to many great ones.
