Good Sounding Boots.....? - Moorthy - 10-22-2004

Okay, don't trash me on this one.....

I've downloaded a few boots over the last couple of years, and I've been disappointed several times as the sound quality just wasn't there. (Not soundboard recordings)

I'd rather hear a great sounding track rather than a muddled recording with "a good rant" on it. Yes, I'm being picky. Sorry.....

The best that I've found so far has been the Modjeska Theatre show, 12/12/98. Great stuff! I've also downloaded and burned the Molson Amphitheatre show from Livedownloads.com. Again, very nice.

If you can suggest any more, that would be appreciated.

Well, you can't go worng with the TV or Radio stuff, some gems:

Planet Studios Sausalito '98 (Often listed as "Unplugged" on Kazaa and such)

London, Centennial Hall, July 7, 1998 (Much Music's "Something On" special... great show all around... voted "Best Bootleg" on the NG a while ago)

CBC's swinging on a star (Some gorgeous accoustic work from Paul and Gord)

Roxy and Elsewhere (A compilation for a promo release, contains the legendary rants)

I'm sure the fine folks over on the trading forum can help you out with every one of those.

Toronto 89 at the Spectrum sounds great, Gino Sweden 94 has a good sound and a cool setlist, Ottawa 93 Another Roadside Attraction sounds good and has some cool ranting. Just to name a few :jump

Then I would have to say Syracuse 2000 is a good one that has not been mentioned yet. Not a soundboard.

I've love the Poets bit where GD says something along the lines of "This is Poets, translated from German, it's a house rocker, designed to get you to wiggle out of your pants".

Try the Chicago shows from the IVL tour 7/02. A good one from that series is 7/18/02, Three Pistols in the encore.

I am mainly agreeing on some other shows already posted. I am not entirely sure what your pickiness threshold really is on quality, but....

-I also have to strongly agree on the 'Something On' show 07-07-1998, If that is the same show also known as the Camp Trillium Benefit show. The sound quality of that show is perfect and the band was SO tight. *My favourite Boot.* Wonderful Setlist. Magic.

-You HAVE to have Roxy & Elsewhere 91. Quality kicks butt and it has possibly the two best monologues ever to boot (pun intended): Double Suicide version of Highway Girl and 'Killerwhaletank' No Hip collection is a Hip collection without this one.

-You might also try 1998-08-22 Zoo Amphitheatre Toledo OH. I think the quality was about as good as Modjeska. Another one of my faves.

Another Roadside Attraction, Ottawa, in 1993 is the best bootleg out there, in my opinion. The entire setlist is full of what we now consider completely ignored gems. Off the top of my head, the setlist is:

Its really just a live presentation of Fully Completely, and the sound quality is pretty damn good... a couple of glitches, but damn near perfect... too bad I was to involved with trying to pass Grade 6 Math at the time, and couldn't even spell 'tragically', let alone have any interest in the band... did anyone on this forum attend that show? I guess the Grey Cup Halftime Show will be their first time at Lansdowne Park in 11 years.

From my experience, there are a couple of variables that you need to consider: what you'll do with the music, the source file and the conversion/burning process.

Since you can get a 160 GB hard drive on sale for about $100, PC storage shouldn't really be an issue. If you want to carry loads of tunes on a portable device, you may need to be willing to sacrifice quality for quantity, but if you're truly looking for high quality sound, you should work with larger, lossless compression files like SHNs and FLACs.

Call me old-school, but I still prefer to carry my music on CDs; I'm not willing to drop $400 on an iPod and I want higher quality sound than I'd get from MP3s on a smaller, more affordable device. For that reason, I have little interest in collecting MP3s and if that's all that's available, I keep my expectations low. I prefer to start with SHNs or FLACs

I also never burn DL'd files straight to disc; I always convert them to WAV, "edit" each track to suit my preferences, and then burn it. It takes a lot more time to do this, but the payoff is worth it and I'm never hesitant to loan or give away a show to an uninitiated listener; I know they'll be blown away by the experience.

I've tried a variety of programs, but I've come to prefer Nero. It has simple and advanced editing capabilities, tons of features, and so far, has produced error-free burns. Typically, I load the WAV files and use two filters: Stereo Widening, which is only effective on a stereo recording, and Equalization. I basically sample a few tracks and play with the EQ settings until I've found a setting that sounds best on all or most of the tracks. I then save that setting with a name that corresponds to the show. If necessary, I use other filters to remove hiss, pop, etc. Once that's done, I drop in a blank disc and click record. Somewhere down the road, I'll use the saved EQ setting as a starting point for a show that may sound similar.

I'm going to help out as much as I can rather than not help at all. I hope maybe someone can help me help you. Boy did that sound corny.

ANYWAY

There's a Canada Day show out there where they do Cordelia. I don't remember what year it was but there's a funny thing Gord does before the song about renaming Canada Day "Happy Stupid Day".

There's also one where they do Fight and Gord is yelling "PUNK" I think it was a California show and it might be the one where the guy hit him in the head with a water bottle. the files says 95-07-01 I don't know if that means 07/01/95 or 01/07/95, I'd think they'd be playing Canada on Canada Day?

The sound quality on those shows are awesome!

I don't have the entire shows and I just looked at the files and that doesn't tell me much.

So, I hope this helps.

Don't ever dl anything from the 4/29/99 Burlington, Vermont Memorial Auditorium show. TERRIBLE quality.

Also stay away from the 10/09/98 Albany Palace Theater show. Terrible sound there too.

Welcome to the forum! Some may call this a weak move on my part, advertising my site or something, but I have some (emphasis on some) of the lyrics to the rants. If you browse them, it'll give ya an idea of which ones you'd like to download. And, of course, if you don't already know, there is an FTP with a huge database (and I mean I can actually hear an echo everytime I cough in there) of songs and such.

Yup I was there!! Only my second time seeing the Hip and it was amazing. I remember Midnight Oil blew a speaker and the Hip were about an hour late coming on. The whole night was incredible, but with out a word of a lie, my ears were almost bleeding after Midnight Oil was done. I can still vividly see downie up on stage pretending to play with himself...........lol.........."I pull when I should firmly grip"..............lol

Great Great memory......I think I definietely suffered permanent ear damage that night!
