Having a number of boots and seeing the boys live got me thinking, what songs do I like more hearing it live then when I heard it on cd.
Nautical Disaster-Better on disc, like the rants and all but the driving drums make it a more powerful song on the disc.
N.O.I.S- Better live, just has more energy live plus the rants.
Joe-On disc, havent heard a version,(yet) that sounds as good as the original.
Grace-This is the track that made me think of this thread, I never really liked it, and couldnt figure out why they did it on SNL. But over the years, have really begun to love it live. I skip over it on DFN, but it's one of my favs live.
Bones-disc.
Bob- Again, didnt like it on the disc, Love it live!!
Music- The disc version is just harder hitting and full of energy that I havent heard live...yet.
Any thoughts, opinions, or ramblings on this subject??

Personally I think they are all better live. Captures everything. A few that stand out that I have witnessed myself:
Fire in the Hole
Grace
Hundredth
Fully
Poets
Courage
Blow
Bones
I could go on and on...and the best part is that every time it is different!

Bobcaygeon has never been better than the album version.
Blow at High Dough only rocks live - the album version just doesn't have the punch.
Poets always sounds better live.
Scared has never been better than on the album.
Courage is way better live, mostly because of lousy production on FC.
Locked is always better live with a longer, more ominous "build".

Hands down, 100th is my favorite song live. Its great on the disc as well, but it has such an overwhelming energy on stage. At "All Across the Causeway" this past September they rocked that song. I've heard it three times on this tour and I'm hoping to hear it again tomorrow night. A few others that I've really enjoyed hearing live were:

Goodlife was amazing live last tour. I really want to hear IOD and Everywhere this time. I noticed they haven't been playing Everywhere that much lately.

I guess I haven't heard too many songs more than a couple times live, but here are a few of my favorites.
Don't Wake Daddy - They played it when I saw them in Edmonton and it was way better than the album version
I've seen them live 3 times and it seems like they get the 100th Meridian better every time. They really ripped through it at the last Minneapolis show.
The only time I saw Fire in the Hole Gord just went berserk.

Man when they opened with it in Rochester Tuesday I almost lost it... great opener, great live!
I will never change my mind to the fact that there are a few HIP tunes that are better left in the Studio.... and I believe they will ...from here on out.

Train Overnight - I've seen this played with Paul hammering on his black acoustic and wow what a different sounding tune in your face.

The Completists?! No way!! Have you heard Park West Chicago?! I LOVE that version. the ending is just killer, and the whole thing flows so rhythmically, and Chris Brown's accompaniment on the organ lends a whole new musical dynamic.

these live versions are my favorites:
fully completely, blow at high dough, escape, eldorado, daredevil, twist my arm. tiger the lion was way better live, it blew me away at the MN zoo 2000 show. also, fire in the hole.
but I prefer the studio versions of these: bobcaygeon, long time running, 100th meridian, poets.
By the way, there were plenty of Minnesotans at the Quest on 10/15, holding tight to our prime spots close to the stage. Also, the reason we never get second encores in Mpls is, according to my hubby, because there is a 10pm curfew for live bands in bars in the city. Can anyone explain THAT stupid rule???

Interestingly, all these songs are Gord at the mic w/ no guitar. They are also rant songs (not so much Blow, though).

How could I forget, Tiger the Lion was one of my favorites. Only seen it live 3 times, but it was awesome!
I don't think we will ever see it again, unfortunately, just get that feeling about it.
One song I heard that was killer back in the day a bit, before my live hip experiences began was Fight. I hope to see it come back, just not sure if it ever will.
I would also have to add Wherewithal...awesome!

I find the softer, more compelling, almost angelic songs (ie. Wheat Kings, Bobcaygeon, Long Time Running, Scared, ABAC... ) will always be best on the studio CD. Whether it be the proper volume control, the 'perfect' singing or the background instrumentals, the mellow acoustic songs starve for the studio, and they just can't compete with the harder/grungier songs live. Each song has its own atmosphere, and the Bobcaygeon's of this world belong in the crystal clear fully dynamic world of studio recording. Songs that are more enjoyable live would definitely have to include:
-NOIS
-Little Bones
-Fire in the Hole
-Blow at High Dough
-Fully Completly
It's too bad The Hip didn't record every album like In Between Evolution... it's that raw presentation that grabs me, and probably why I would consider any song off of Fully Completely, Music@Work and In Violet Light better live than on the CD.

I think alot of the Day for Night songs sound really great live, like Inch an Hour and Inevitablility of Death. I love hearing Fully Completely live too that song always sounds great live so does Blow at High Dough. I love listening to the Hip live, the songs take on a whole new life of their own.

I like 100th much better on the album. However, while Courage is great on the album, you cannot beat it live, it's always a standout at a Hip show. I also like Nautical much better on the album. I never really liked M@W but it is always much better live as well. NOIS is a staple live, and may I say, much better than on the album, though it is solid on UTH. I have never actually heard Locked live, though I have on bootlegs, and it sounds like it would be a standout song live. What can I say? You haven't fully completely experienced The Hip until you've caught a live show.
