The best 3 live shows - cougar_trader - 10-16-2004

Probably a repeat topic but...........

I was asked to burn the best live show The Hip have done, for a friend recently. From start to finish my favorite has got to be 'Hengelo Netherlands' 1991. It's all older stuff but it's still my favorite. The story about Dave Powell getting them lost on the way to the gig and Gord making him pay for with his Sibling Romance Rant is good for a laugh. It was also my first boot that got me hooked. My preference is live over studio any time. I've got all the studio CD's, but they rarely make it to the cd player. It sounds best when everyone in the band plays to the crowd, ten times more passion.

My first hip concert, Sept. 1993, Vic Theartre, Chicago

I too like the old stuff. In my opinion, they need to mix up their set lists more--they are getting too predictable.

my 3 would have to be:

1. Hamilton 2000, double set, heard opiated live for the first time, great show and I had the best seat in the rink.
2. Moncton 2000, killer setlist
3. Hamilton 1995, my first Hip concert! Rocked :thumb:

I'm a newbie to seeing the Hip live.

My first was Skydome, June 21, 2003.
The live recording at Cobo Hall for Live Between Us is amazing.
And Edgefest in Barrie last year was supposed to have been killer.

1. the 7th house in pontiac mi july 2000. (hands down the best show by any band i've ever seen)

2. cobo arena detroit 2000 ("evening with" show) great to hear such a mix of rarities ie....everytime you go, long time running and lets stay engaged...)

3. chene park detroit mi aug (i think) 1993 my intruduction to the Hip

That I've seen?

1. Ottawa Bluesfest '03. Predictable setlist, but a killer performance.
2. Apple Valley 2 '00. The Hip in a zoo??! Get outta here. Plus, a solid set, a partisan crowd and Gord in the fetal position...good times.
3. Mod Club '03. Standing underneath Gord during "Grace, Too" was just too weird...ah, memories. :thumb:

I would never venture at a complete top 3 but I would submit the charity gig in Montreal at Club Soda for best Hip Show. It's certainly my best and though I always enjoy a good Hip show, nothing has touched this concert for me.

Highlights.

1) Small venue, great sound, packed house.
2) Plenty of green going around, the entire place is buzzed.
3) Gord chewing out the audience for crowd surfing and the crowd collectively apologizing to Gord.
4) The guy in the wheelchair who shouted "I wanna surf!!" as soon as the Hip started up again, got hoisted into the air wheelchair and all, spent the entire song surfing the crowd, alone, in his wheelchair. Ended up on stage where Gord parked him on the side, waved off security and let him stay there for the next 3 songs while the House just erupted into complete Hip madness... fuck me... what a night.
5) They played a song Gord introed as "Mein Kempf Made Easy" I never heard it again...

That and I barely made it to that show, it was an epic adventure just getting there on time...

Ok, ok, I snuck 4 in there ... I don't know, there's just something about seeing the Hip outside, especially in the dark, there's an extra element added that indoor shows just don't have.

ARA's were an all-day experience, and the buzz building up for the Hip's set to close the night was awesome. Plus the supporting acts leading up just got you more wound up. Midnight Oil in '93, Sheryl Crow in '97 (1 exception - Ziggy Marley in '95 - love his music, but It dragged the crowd into a lull.)

Seeing the Hip in my hometown Kelowna last year was amazing, it was at City Park, right on the beach, awesome. People running into the lake between bands, it was classic.

I will never forget the show in High River '95, the Hip played and extended version of Scared and right when it started, a huge lighting storm broke out off in the distance, providing an amazing backdrop.
