Anxiety and life's changing ways - jen - 10-15-2004

Does anyone really like change in their life? I think most of us truly enjoy the comforts of daily monotony. It is comforting in sorts, to wake up and go about the day without much thought. There comes a time when things change though, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, but it definitely stirs life up when it happens. I hate the anxiety that it causes.

The reason for this babble is because I have decided to go back to college after being out for more than 10 years. Quite frankly, I am scared to death. I have become so comfortable in my daily life that I am not sure how I will handle this. I have ALWAYS had a love for medicine so I am going to go back to get my registered nursing degree (and maybe even go on further.) I know that my career choice is not a mistake, I already possess alot of medical knowledge and I have always had the medical 'itch'.

I read what those of you in college go through and I used to think..."well, I am glad I don't have to do that..write term papers and such" Here I am at almost 31 years old and about to start writing term papers again Confusedhock:

Ron talked about how much his life is changing in a thread awhile ago. I was getting anxious just reading about all of his new phases in life. Am I ready to embark on this new phase in life...a whole new career change? I think so, I just wish the anxiety would leave me be. :?

Anyway, have any of you gone back to college after being out for a long time? What other huge changes in your life have you gone through? Help me out...make me see that change is ok after all

PS Sorry for the novel...I never write this much

Change is always a good thing, in my opinion. While a daily routine is calming and predictable, too much of it makes alot of people itching for a challenge or something new to explore. I've been in school for 7 years, Jen, and as much as I hate having to write term papers about decontructionism in politics and other useless pyschological noise, it makes me glad to know i'm armed with the knowledge and education to get out of the rut. Good luck to ya Jen! :thumb:

Jen,

I don't think there are a lot of people out there who have set out a life for themselves, who wake up one day and smile at the prospect of having to re-arrange their lives, leave their comfort zone and proceed onto something new of which the outcome is uncertain. Change scares the shit out of most people but that's why we're forced to experience it a couple times throughout our lives.

What always helps with me is knowing I have something to fall back on should something go wrong. Imagine a worst case scenario: you end up hating school. I highly doubt this will happen but it's just an example. You hate school - well so what? You can always quit school and slide right back into the life you have now and what will you have lost? Nothing. You only have things to gain so why not go for it? I'm sure you'll do just great. :thumb:

I've always loved change. My dad was in the military so we moved every four years and nowadays I get bored really really easily with routines. I got kicked outta school a couple times not because I didn't understand it or anything but just cuz I didn't like sitting in a classroom every day. Ha.

I wouldn't call myself a busy-body or something like that, I just run on impulse. Whatever I feel like doing I do. The majority of us are creatures of habit and prefer to stay in some sorta familiar circumstance. I love change.

If you're having doubts about whether or not you should do what you want to do then the best advice I can give is to jump in head-first.

Worry about the water-level later.

Never been much of a change fan myself, get really comfortable, too comfortable in routine. But sometimes its necessary, and if nursing is what you want, of course you change to go get it...besides, despite even my bemoaning, school's not terrible. best of luck!

the way i look at it is, If you dont have health insurance you might as well go into nursing.

Jen,

If it helps you feel better. You know we're the same age. I am SO JEALOUS that you are going back to college.

I dropped out of college for a multitude of reasons when I was 18 and I should have stayed and finished when I had that chance!!!!

Now, I'm poor and can't afford going back to college. It's the only true regret I have in life and I've been through a hell of a lot!

I'm so happy for you! Good luck! I know when I went back in the spring of 96, I was 22, I took one class, I did even better than I did when I was in originally!

change can be scary, but sometimes necessary...

Well, I start in the Spring...15 credit hours transferred (from college 10 years ago) and my classes are set up. I am on my way, I should have my nursing degree in about 2 1/2 years (part time) :jump Thought I would give an update since many of you gave me such positive reinforcement!! :thumb:

I never thought I would EVER use this phrase, but I can't think of what to say, except....

"You Go, Girl!!!!" :thumb: :thumb:

Seriously, I know you will have great success. Just remember, we're all pulling for you.

- thipfan73 - 11-06-2004

Ditto what Ktown said!
