States Club Shows - cochise - 10-13-2004

Just a quick question for all of you lucky enough to attend a States show on a regular basis.

It looks like most of the clubs the hip play range in capacity from around 600 to 2500. Do they normally sell out these venues or are they 1/2 full, 1/4 full?? I assume that ones closer to the boarder get a few more people attending, but what about the ones further away?

I saw that great seats were still available for the Toledo show but now it is moved to what I am guessing is a smaller club. Any idea if it was because of ticket sales or anything?

I am attending the Grand Rapids show at The Orbit, says the capacity is around 1800, any guess on if it will be even near capacity??

I went to San Francisco and Portland last week. I saw a few people get tickets at around 6:30 PM but my guess is the place was near capacity (1200). Portland didn't look sold out to me (650) and in both places you could have got there 15 min before Sam Roberts went on and would have been in the first 3 rows.

In September at the Landmark I remember looking to the back of the theater and seeing many empty seats. It was alot more packed when they played there in October of 2002. I was pretty suprised to see how empty it was in the back. Then again that could because as soon as they started playing all the people who has shitty tickets ran to the front and stomped on those who actually did have the good seats!!! Confusedhock:

The 2002 Syracuse show was also on a Saturday night; this year's show was during the week.

So in 2002 I could drive from Torontp to Syracuse to see them; this year I couldn't.

So whether or not a show is on a weekend has a large effect on attendance, at least in American cities within driving distance of Canada.

Just returned from Portland/Seattle shows...I'm pretty sure Portland was sold out, but I know they did release some more tickets before the show. It was my first time at the Aladdin Theatre, and was surprised at how small it was...only a few rows (8?) in the balcony. We got in the theatre a bit before SRB went on, and stood second row right in front of Bobby Baker the whole show. The theatre couldn't have held more than 700, but I think it was pretty full. Not sure how many tickets The Showbox in Seattle sold, but I know my ticket number was 1197 adn the place was jammed. The last time I saw The Hip in Minneapolis, at First Ave. in 2002, the show was sold out and jam-packed. Looking forward to The Quest tomorrow night.

The Aladdin was a let down for me. After being in the Fillmore two nights previous, the Aladdin reminded me of the old movie theatre I went to as a kid, only smaller and grungier.

I've been seeing the Hip for 11 years in Chicago and Milwaukee and have seen both sold out shows and half-filled venues.

In 1998, the Hip played 4 nights straight at Martyr's a bar that holds 350 tops. All 4 shows were sold out at least 2 weeks prior. I was lucky to score a ticket for about double the price and sat at the bar about 20 feet from Paul. I was also shut out of the hip in 1995, prior to DFN at Metro, a cool rock club that holds about 1200 people. Couldn't even get a scalped ticket.

Conversely, in 2000, I attended a Hip show at the UIC Amphitheatre, a college basketball stadium that holds about 6000 for a rock show. This was a "stadium" show with full lights and everything. The venue was at most half full.

This saturday, the Hip is at the Riviera Theatre, a nice room that holds about 2000. Pretty large venue for the Hip in Chicago and will most likely be sold out by showtime. But I'll be by the stage.......

thats true I never thought about the weeknight thing. For some reason I was thinking that the show in 2002 was on a Friday. I can def relate to the weeknight thing, its so hard to work it out with classes and work. Especially when there's a distance to go. Next week it worked out well for me though, I'm on break and i'll be seeing them tues in rochester and thurs in Albany. :lol:

i'm always harping on about getting the hip back over to europe, but to further the cause, in 2000 when The Hip played Shepherd's Bush (which holds 2000 people) the show was sold out weeks in advance (there were even ads in the paper advertising the gig, but saying it was sold out -- odd that). Touts were charging over £70/ ticket. it was so strange to see that kind of frenzy.

in 2002 they played 2 nights at the same venue, but i don't think either nights sold out -- both were full, though. probably 3500 people over the two nights. still, not bad.

not trying to discount it, but if the hip are playing Asheville's The Orange Peel bar, i think we at least deserve a few shows over here.....
