Perhaps this is a very "15 year old" rant (probably is) but I'm going to go ahead with it anyways. Yes, I am a 15 year old, and yes, I do love the Hip. Which begs the question....why do people my age have such horrible taste in music? I mean really - its very hard to find someone else my age who really KNOWS about the Hip and LIKES the hip. They all listen to terrible music and people have the balls to tell me the music I listen to sucks. heh.

And of course with the Hip culture there's drinking - whihc I can't really do (not legally at least) which also does suck.

anyways, point of this thread - being young and liking the Hip sucks. Input?

I am only 20 and have liked the hip for some time now,

i have experienced a lot of friends who could care less about the hip and their music, but i really dont care about what other people think. I think that the majority of music today is in fact crap, but i allow people to keep their own opinions because music is a personal thing. Follow what you like to listen to and what moves you. If people dont give a shit about the hip, they dont deserve to listen to them anyways.

Many people are swayed by the mainstream which is what you hear on MTV, Muchmusic (garbage) and what's danced to in the bars etc. They listen to it because it's labelled by society to be cool to listen to. It's like clothes and fashions. We let what is cool and hip (no pun intended) be dictated by someone else or a group. But while one person may like it, others may not. We are human and still have our own opinions and uniqueness in what we like.

I used to think my parents were crazy when they thought my music was unsettling and I only listened to AC/DC when I was 15. Generation gaps also come into play. I say listen to whatever you want, wherever you want.

This may surprise you, but there are quite a bit of Hip fans in my High School. Most kids do have pretty bad musical tastes, though.

It's funny how people are saying Much Music is crap. I had Much Music on my cable system about 5 years ago, and loved it, because it's the only place in the States that I can see The Hip. Now MTV, that's pure crap. They don't even show music anymore. It's all stupid shows! But I digress.

Most music today is bad. I probably listen to The Hip 70% of the time and absolutely can't stand FM radio. How much "StainedPuddleOfNickelCreed" can you take?

In talking to Canadian fans at my many Hip shows, I was under the impression that "EVERYONE" in Canada loves The Hip. Interesting.

I'm 19 and The Hip have been my favourite band since 1995. I started liking them when "Nautical Disaster" was getting played every five minutes on MuchMusic. All of my friends like The Hip, but most people my age or younger like pretty shitty music. I was surprised actually earlier this month, at both the Winnipeg shows I saw some people younger than me. I guess there's still a few people younger than me that have a decent taste in music.

I heard an interview with Johnny Fay and he said that the music scene right now is just like when disco was popular. The Rolling Stones survived it, and then made some of their most popular music after that and had some of their most successful tours. Good music (and The Hip) will be "it" again eventually. I would actually be offended right now if The Hip were getting played alot on Much and being lumped in with all the other shit that's "in" right now.

My two favourite bands, The Hip and Pearl Jam, are making some of the most exciting music of their careers right now, but being ignored by the media in comparision to the attention they got a decade ago. In a way, I kinda like it because it makes you feel like more of a fan.

A belated response, but I can relate,

I am an 18 year old whose musical influences don't span much past '96. Any band after that is pure crap. It's all about the hip, pearl jam, soundgarden, nirvana, and silverchair. Since soundgarden broke up, and nirvana, well you know, and Silverchair isn't going anywhere fast, all I have is the Hip, and Pearl Jam. Most of my friends think the Hip is classic rock, stuff for those 30 year olds, but I disagree. It takes an intelligent, and musically appreciative individual to get into the Hip. Everyone knows who they are, but like me, weren't into them when they were ' Mainstream '. I couldn't care less. Music is suppose to move me, and when I hear today's crap on the radio, I feel like vomiting. They'll attack mainstream and vapourize societies tastes in the coming years.
