yeah, it is still beta and you can only get one if you get an invite, but they tell 6 friends and so on. Great marketing plan.
To think they were selling on ebay a few months ago, now you can't even give them away!

I think they're moving away from initial testing and into the later stages where things such as volume, traffic, etc. become more of an issue and as a result, they need a larger group of users to properly assess the system.

what exactly is Gmail... I've seen it here on this board, but am completely lost to what it does... is it some sort of glorified email system?

its email offered by Google, the search engine. I personally dont see anything special about it, Yahoo offers the same amount of free space and as far as I can tell doesn't have ads tailored by spyware.

myself I like my gmail account. The adds they show are not intrusive, they only work on the page you are viewing, and I have found them very helpfull. I trust google more than hotmail or yahoo, but everyone has their own experiences and opinions. I have even heard they are creating a gbrowser based on mozilla.
