seriously... this song should be retired and never see the light of day again. who's with me?
enough is enough. there are so many other songs that could take that spot.

NOIS should not be retired permanently, but maybe cryogenically frozen for a few years.
At one concert I attended, I recall that they either opened with it or played it second and it was totally as if they were just going through the motions, getting it out of the way so that they could go on to other songs that they found more interesting. And that was a good five-six years ago.
But it's still got a little Minnesota in it, so it shouldn't be retired permanently. Maybe once a tour in whatever town they play in that's closest to New Orleans.

I would agree that it could afford to be "put away" for a year or two. But not forever. There are many other songs that could be put in its place for awhile. I'm really hoping it doesn't come up this thursday in syracuse.

hell no, it's a staple, it's not a hip show until New Orleans sinks.
also, try to think of all the people at every hip show who've never seen them before...don't you think they too deserve to hear NOIS? i would cry if i went to see the hip for the first time and they didn't play it after playing it at every show for over a decade.

put it on the shelf for a few, so many other awesome songs can replace it. Hearing it now isnt anything special. like some has said earlier, they are basically just going through the motions. It sounds almost identical to the album version now. and on the IVL tour, they were doing it early in the sets, probably to get it out of the way and they can focus on the rest of the night

but come on... it was never a strong song to begin with. the early (read: early 90's) jams were great, but the song itself is weak.

I couldn't disagree more. The song is phenomenal---it's still among their very best works---and is and will always be, deservedly, their signature number. It's a bit spooky, actually: here, suddenly, after a so-so EP, is The Hip in sudden full flight, lyrically mature, musically hungry, absolutely kick-ass.
Now as to whether the song should be at least temporarily retired, count me among the 'nos.' The Darkest Canuck is right. And I have personally yet to see a show where NOIS is really a drag. I think it only SEEMS like a drag if (a) you're comparing it to dozens of previous performances and (B) have some principled objection to the Hip playing their popular favourites over less frequently-played numbers. I saw them do it at Richard's on Richards and got a kick out of it, especially when Downie's strings exploded. :lol:

It must be a personal thing among Hip fans. I have seen many shows and Robbie's opening riff still gives me goose bumps every time I hear it.
When The Hip played it in Cleveland, people went a bit crazy.

As a hardcore fan who has been to 20+ shows over the years it wouldn't bother me one bit if it wasn't played the next time I see them. However, for the casual fan, they would be super pissed if it wasn't played. I can't count the number of people I've been at shows with that say: "their new stuff is OK, but NOIS is still their best song."
