Billboards And Advertising - lord brazle - 09-08-2004

(The first installment of my bitchings on the world's problems...)

I frigging hate billboards. I've defaced so many of the god-damn things. Why?! I ask, why must we be subjected to giant pictures of hamburgers and cars!? Don't get me on the subject of this supposed-freedom we're supposed to have, but nobody ever asked for these... We walk to work or school or to a store and all along the streets and highways and friggin everywhere we are being brainwashed! And it is a form of brainwashing, constantly hitting us with images in order to force us into buying the product... do we not have a freedom, a choice, not to be subjected to advertising?... Who allowed companies to plaster their friggin shit all over the place?! And the commercials on TV, too... a persistent drumming on my friggin eyes of "Buy this product and you will be beautiful." or "Buy this product and you will be cool." And it's all subconscious too, we don't realize the affects these have on us... Maybe this isn't neccessarily a "new" or "important" observation about ads... but, I mean, damn! Half of the ad-campaigns that are coming out are friggin stupid!

Yeah, It's the worst downtown, I can't believe it. Advertising doesn't even work for me, unless it's a cd or something, ofcourse. It's bullshit. They waste our time during t.v shows, get on public transit you see them...it just never ends.

Sure, advertising can be (and usually is) annoying, but how else do you suggest we become informed about the products/ services we may want to purchase?

And if I had $1 everytime I heard someone say "advertising doesn't even work for me". I hate to tell you this, but it does work. If it didn't, no one would do it. Instead, its a multi-billion dollar industry.

And no, I'm not in advertising. I guess I've just come to accept it as part of my daily life. But I'm in my early 30s, so lots of things that used to bug me in my early 20s don't bug me anymore. Except for boy bands. Boy bands will always bug me.

Everyone has a choice.

Corporations choose to advertise the products they manufacture in an effort to generate sales. You might not like the way they do it, with big splashy billboards, and high cost TV commercials; but advertising works.

Additionally, if you mention to someone else that you like The Hip, (or anything else for that matter) that's advertising at its most grassroots and valuable level. Word of mouth is what advertisers wet dreams are made of.

yup yup,

On top of that, the tv program that you're watching when those commercials come on are paid for by the advertising that they sell. Like it or not, advertising is part of a free market economy.

You'd probably enjoy reading Adbusters. I don't agree with everything they say, but I have really enjoyed my subscription.
