How many songs do you download using whatever program?
I got (right now) 260 songs (all downloaded) ... using WinMX (cuz no spyware's included).
Mostly one-hit-by-a-band and some-sampling-of-a-new-band type-things, etc.
This is not counting all my Hip albums I burned to my computer and I don't share those ones anyway.
Just curious how popular downloading music actually is...

I download music all the time. Mainly it is simply to sample an album before I go out and buy it; but lately I have become very disillusioned with the 'popular' music industry. With TV shows like Cribs, and Newlyweds showcasing the lavish lifestyles that musicians are living, all the while crying foul that downloading music is hurting the artists. The same holds true, in my opinion, of movies and movie stars.
The outrageous fortunes that pop and movie stars are accumulating sicken me. How inspired can art be if it is created by the motivation to make money?
Sure, there are bands out there, who are making great music, and make a living doing it, but they are in the definite minority.

I'll only buy an album if I feel the artist is passionate about their work (and i like it). Hip, matthew good, pearl jam, tool, audioslave, etc., you never see these bands on tv shows showing off their house and cars and other garbage that they blow wads of cash on.... they're owned by the record company.
The bands that I mentioned are modest and make music for a reason other than money, imho, so I buy their CDs. Sometimes I'll sample a couple of songs, however I'm usually able to hear their single a couple times -- be it on tv or radio -- and if it works for me then I'll go buy the CD.
*edit : I just wanted to say that I personally think the audioslave album is the best cd put out in 2003. The lyrics blow me away.

I strongly agree and live show is amazing
i download to sample cd before buying i bought so many crappy cds before i got a computer and hated it
now if its good ill buy it
as for canadian bands i buy most albums i dont need to preview because i know they will be kickass, it is canadian what more can you say

I've found this sickening too. Especially when you hear of other countries with the whole population going hungry (and some on our own soil) and then motion pictures make millions upon millions in the first weekend they hit the theatres... That's just impossible to fathom. "Humanity"? Ha!... And recording artists with like 30 sports cars? Then they give $100, 000 to a charity and it makes it okay? Just thinking about it now I'm mad... :x

its only to reduce the amount they pay in taxes specially when you make $20million on touring and album sales
