I got to check out The Spades at the 360 in Toronto last night. I hadn't watched them play in about a year. Wow, what a difference!
Great songs, great lights. Totally nice guys, too. I can't wait to see them on the 12th in Kingston!

The Spades set to launch new EP

The Spades launches its new The SpadesEP tomorrow then introduce the music live at the Montreal House on Friday.

The local rock band is poised to again take its music across Canada with two tours planned, said drummer Tom (Winchester) Street in a telephone interview.

The band is made up of James McKenty on vocals and guitar, Street and Chachi Robichaud on bass, mandolin and vocals.

The band has played hundreds of shows across Canada and shared the stage with some of Canada's leading musicians, including Sam Roberts Band, Blue Rodeo and The Tragically Hip.

Tomorrow it's an open (free) party at Spanky's, on Hunter St. W. beside the entrance to the parking garage with the band arriving around 9 p. m.

The five-song EP, recorded by Gord Sinclair of The Tragically Hip, and mixed by Gord Johnson, of Big Sugar and Grady, will be played with the three band members meeting guests, selling EPs and signing them.

"We wanted something that people could take home from the concert," said Street, explaining why the EP was produced in preparation for the concert tour they will be doing with Grady, starting Oct. 8 in Nanaimo, B. C.

The full CD (Subatomic), which will include the five original songs on the EP, will be released in early 2010.

The release ofSubatomic means a full cross-Canada tour, said Street.

But between the Grady tour, which will be mostly in B. C. and Alberta, will be followed by an Ontario tour, beginning in Kingston in late October.

The interesting thing about the tours includes McKenty getting married in Peterborough on Oct. 24.

McKenty is flying back from Grand Prairie, Alta., while Street and Robichaud will be driving the equipment back to Peterborough, hopefully being in time for the wedding.

"We're both in the wedding," said Street, with a chuckle.

Street said Sinclair and Johnson are also recording and mixing the CD.

The band has been a regular act for the last five years at several local venues and festivals, including the Montreal House, Splice, the Festival of Lights and the Peterborough Folk Festival where they were honoured as the emerging artist to watch.

In 2008, the band toured with Canadian rocker Matthew Good for a cross-country tour for 18 shows from Halifax to Peterborough and Toronto to Victoria.

The Spades took the stage at the Canadian Wakeboard Championships at Beavermead Park in August.

Sings on the EP includeThe Revenge of Johnny Laundry, Endless Dream, Ghosts in the Machine, Young black coltsand Stanley Kubrick.

Street said the band has been together for approximately five years. McKenty and Street have performed together for more than seven years.

"We look at the band, the three of us, for being five years," said Street.
