Must Reads - Number Four Bobby Orr - 08-26-2004
Well, since everyone here appears to be literate, give me your must read books. I'm always looking for books to read, so give me a book that you just couldn't imagine yourself not having read.
I'm going with War and Peace - Tolstoy. It's the best book I have ever read, without a doubt. Long, yes, but really not all that hard to follow and highly enjoyable.
Honourable mention goes to Catcher in the Rye - Salinger and 1984 - Orwell.

I'd vote for 1984 - Orwell
More recently I believe everyone should have to read "Naked Economics" Charles Wheelan. Just a great book that helps shed light on concepts that effect everyday life.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by David Eggars
Truly heart-wrenching, this book is oddly also one of the funniest books I have read in awhile.....a must-read for sure....

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. It's excellent. Very witty and well paced. Even if you're someone who doesn't generally like memoirs, this really is a must read. :thumb:

The Alienist
Caleb Carr
A crime novel, but easily set apart from the millions out there because it's a profile of the first serial killer in New York written in the style of a book from 1896 even though it's brand new.
It's like CSI for the 1890s, with mind games replacing the high-priced technology. A very cerebral book that devles so much deeper into psychology than most other crime-related novels.

Ghost Soldiers-Hampton Sides
Wonderful true story about a daring rescue of Bataan Death March survivors from a Philippine concentration camp in the closing days of WWII. :thumb:

Da Vinci Code- Great book. If the bible never realy made sense to you try reading this. Story is alright but it is worth reading just for the history behind some of the facts, really fascinating read.
P.s. I've never been a reader of the bible or religous

Here Here....I just finished this book in 2 sittings...grand total of about 11 hours. I'm still floored as to how good this book was. This is what people were talking about when they said "I can't put it down"
I absolutely love the history behind this book, it has been incredibly researched and very well written.

The Communist Manifesto - Karl Marx
Motorcycle Diaries - Che Guevara
The Manifesto is such a short book, it should only take an hour, and the Motorcycle Diaries is incredibly illustrative. You feel like you are right there with him on his journey. Just incredible!!!

The Painted Bird, Jerzy Kozinski....it could be that I'm in Poland, so the story becomes that much more relatable, but still, good read...

Anything by David Adams Richards ... but in particular, Mercy Among the Children and River of the Broken-Hearted. that is, if you like books that make you tear you hair out because you can't believe that so many bad things are happening to characters you like at the hands of characters so odious but so real that they are scary, then you'll love the New Brunswick author's entire opus.

anything by English comedian Stephen Fry...absolutely brilliant..tragic, hilarious, thought-provoking...i believe he only has 3, i'd start with The Hippopotomus..
that and the SNL "Live From New York"...it's a great read, as cast members are just quoted rather than a long drawn out bio...it does cover the series from the beginning, and runs right up until 2002 i think...great read...

Also, along the same lines is Brave New World by Huxley. I think I may even like it more than 1984.
