Why 20? Because trying to narrow it down to 10 is just way too difficult. There's only one rule- no multiple band entries. In other words, you can't pick the Hip 10 times. Here are mine, in no particluar:

1. The Hip- Day for Night
2. Neil Young- Harvest
3. The Band- Music From Big Pink
4. Rheostatics- Whale Music
5. The Weakerthans- Left and Leaving
6. Blue Rodeo- Nowhere to Here
7. The Lowest of the Low- Shakespeare, My Butt
8. 54-40- Smilin' Buddha Cabaret
9. Skydiggers- Restless
10. Sloan- Twice Removed
11. Sarah Harmer- You Were Here
12. Gordon Lightfoot- Sundown
13. Joni Mitchell- Blue
14. Cowboy Junkies- The Trinity Session
15. Crash Vegas- Aurora
16. Spirit of the West- Save this House
17. Headstones- Teeth and Tissue
18. The Pursuit of Happiness- Love Junk
19. Junkhouse- Birthday Boy
20. The Northern Pikes- Snow in June


I'm sure I'm missing a few that should be on this list. Next time I'll do a top 50 so I can squeeze 'em all in.

That's just about every band in Canada that's ever made it!

The only other band that comes to mind is Rush.

Jimmy Rankin - Handmade (MAJOR goof missing this one!!!) Big Grin

Gordon Lightfoot - Summertime Dream

...that's all that I can think of off the top of my head. How about some luv for the East Coasters?! Jimmy Rankin's solo album is absolutly brilliant folky pop, and Ron Sexsmith needs no justification!

Great picks! Believe me, it was tough coming up with just 20. Ron Sexsmith would definitely be in my top 50, as would Leonard Cohen, the Bourbons, and of course Chris & Kate. A few others I left off that deserve to be on the list are The Constantines, Weeping Tile, the Inbreds, Eric's Trip, Daniel Lanois, 13 Engines, Change of Heart, Sam Roberts, and the Grapes of Wrath.

If you want to look at the East Coast, why wouldn't you include Great Big Sea? I'm not a huge fan but they definitely have a leg up on Jimmy Rankin in my mind. Matt Mays is another good Easterner. Some other friends of mine like Jimmy Swift Band, Slowcoaster but I don't care for them really. JPE is from the east coast. He's decent I guess but I don't like him that much. Eyes for Telescopes are all right. Rude Mechanicals are pretty decent.

Slowcoaster, the Mellotones, Bucket Truck...I've seen most of the bands form the area and they're mostly OK but not great. Nobody whose album I'd listen to on loop. But you're right about GBS...the reason they're not on my list is I don't like their albums. I can't sit down and listen to that stuff. Their live show, where you can jump around and drink and bellow along with even the fastest songs as sloppily as you can, trumps their albums anyday. No question it's good music, but it doesn't come across as well on their albums. That music was MADE to be loved live!

Grooveless, have you checked out Road Rage, GBS's live album? It's excellent! :thumb:
