I can't believe what I'm seeing on TV! Of course the big news here is the final Phish show in Coventry VT. The mud is bad they are turning people away. People are just parking on interstate 91, there's like 7 miles of cars parked there, and they are walking like 10-20 even more miles to go to to the show. People are just ditching their cars and going. Some people have even been left behind by people they were traveling with! Even if they finally get there, they might be still turned away. The concert area, parking, campgrounds, etc can not handle any more people because of the mud! It's a wonder they don't have a riot.

So much for the organizers telling people to not come early! Seems like the early comers will get to see the show!

Phish was supposed to hit the stage at 5pm and they still have yet to go on. It's just a huge mess. I think someone's trying to tell Phish something! lol

I had a feeling, knowing what I know about the Northeast Kingdom, that this was not a good idea, even if it is EXTREMELY well organized and even if the weather was better.

This of course begs the question. What if this were the hip? Would you do the same?

Hey 73 -
I'm new here..but I saw your message.

There are soooo many people that are livid right now.
It's not Phishes fault be draggin all those people out into
God-knows-where, gotta be more prepared.

Why I never go in to the middle of nowhere for a show.

Many friends walked 12 miles after dumping thier car on the side of the
highway, and others barely got in after 10 hours waiting in traffic. Some turned around and drove back to North Carolina (where I am)

Man oh man...I was so disappointed to hear this. I know people who went and I bet they didn't get in...a terrible way for such a legendary band to end their run. Maybe they'll have an "kiss and make up" concert for their distraught fans at a proper venue in a reasonable location before they completely throw in the towel...

It's not that Coventry is in the middle of nowhere, it's just that it's kinda crammed up there in the Northeast corner of Vermont and I know what the roads are like and it's not exactly the best place to be having this.

When they had it in Plattsburgh, sorta my home town, it was so nice because the concert was at the old airbase and on a huge landing strip, big enough to land the space shuttle, and the site was right off I-87, plenty of room there and no mud.

They are talking some kind of way to give the fans that didn't get in something. They let in 30,000 and were expecting 70,000.

Here's what they're going through...I wonder if anybody's keeping an eye on those cars on I91? Sounds like prime hunting grounds for thieves...not to mention the potential for deadly accidents with cars everywhere on a busy highway...

COVENTRY, Vt. (AP) -- With hundreds of cars stuck in the mud and more pouring in, Vermont state police started turning back traffic headed to the Phish farewell concert Saturday, and told ticketholders they would get refunds but no admission.

Police erected a roadblock on Interstate 91 and other roads and told fans headed to the two-day festival at the Newport State Airport to turn around.

"Because of the heavy rains, parking inside the festival site has basically become impossible, and they're concerned for people's safety," said Adam Lewis, a spokesman for the concert promoter, Great Northeast Productions.

Heavy rains Thursday and Friday turned the campgrounds into quagmires, and local residents with tractors were busy pulling stuck cars from the mud.

Any of the 70,000 ticket holders denied entry will get their money back, the promoter said in a statement.

The promise of a refund was no comfort to fans stopped on Interstate 91, many of whom abandoned their vehicles and headed out on foot for the concert site, about 20 kilometres from the nearest exit.

Cars lay empty along the side of the highway for at least three kilometres past the exit.

"There is no way I am not going to try to get in," said Erika Sander of Blodgett, Oregon, who flew to Manchester, N.H., and rented a car to drive to the show. She left the car on the side of the road and started walking to the concert Saturday.
