Seriously folks, what the hell happened to Muchmusic?? About 12 years ago, before Rick the Temp, Much on Demand, Britney, Christina or Avril, there were really cool things going on over at the Chum building. Today it's nothing more than an Mtv/VH1 clone pandering to the top 40 bubblegum pop crowd. They used to be pretty groundbreaking back in the day, playing videos by cool bands like Eric's Trip, the Inbreds, Hayden, Weeping Tile, etc...but now they've completely lost their edge. It's a damn shame. Sure, they still play videos by Canadian bands and once in a while you see somebody cool like Sam Roberts or Pilate, but most of the time it's all garbage like Avril, Sum 41, OLP and Simple Plan. Where are the videos by exciting underground acts like The Weakerthans, The Constantines, K-OS, Broken Social Scene, or the Stills?
I also remember when they used to show full-length concerts by some of the best bands in Canada at the time. There was great stuff like the Hip live at the Misty Moon, The Northern Pikes on the Rock, and really cool festival shows like the Great Canadian Party in '92 which featured performances from Das Hips, the Grapes of Wrath, 54-40, Blue Rodeo, 13 Engines, and others. And then there was the Kumbaya Festival in '93 with the Hip (again), the Lowest of the Low, Cowboy Junkies, The Watchmen, Blue Rodeo, 54-40, and The Waltons (remember them??) And who could forget Gord singing lead vocals on Andrew Cash's "Hey Maria". It seems Muchmusic isn't interested in capturing moments like that on film anymore, which is too bad. They didn't even broadcast the Concert for Toronto for pete sakes, which was bizarre considering current "it girl" Avril Lavigne was part of the show. The only good thing left on that station is the New Music with George (whom I consider to be the only Muchmusic V-jay with any credibility whatsoever). I don't know...maybe I'm just gettin' old.

I never watch MM anymore, but whenever Im flipping through the channels and come across it, theres NEVER a music video playing. Seriously, all it is is "the fabulous life of so and so...", "young and loaded", "cribs", "who would win in a fight using only sacks upon sacks of money to bludgeon each other with", etc etc.
Music is entirely irrelevent to Much Music these days.

I remember that too.... I have loads of VHS tapes full of gems from back in the day.. and NOW... it's not even worth turning on. Adn you're right too... the arrival of Rick the Temp really was the beginning of the end.

I've run into George a few times around the city, and every time he has been totally cool. Always willing to take a minute and say hello. And that guy knows his music. I think he must have spent more than a few hours studying with Alan Cross, during his full-time stint at Edge102.

I really wish that one of the other great local Toronto stations would pick up the tradition of airing live concert events. Perhaps Toronto1 could fill that void, and draw some viewers?

funny i saw the waltons mentioned a few posts back...i used to play on a beer league hockey team with jason and keith from the band...the vintage vinyl & hemp emporium villians...twas a hazy couple of years....our jerseys kicked ass, ganja leaves for shoulder patches, the whole 9

I'm guessing the short answer is that there are more 14 year old girls watching MM than any other demographic, so they've got to pander to them.
I'm guessing the longer answer is that economically it is cheaper for them to buy programming from MTV/VH1 than produce their own interesting content.
I've often wondered if late on a Friday night when George S has had one too many if he looks at himself in the mirror, thinks about who he works with, and wonders WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING? Or maybe he figures that as the lone voice with a clue, he's fighting the good fight for the rest of us.
The rest of the VJs seem to be in their late teens so I don't want to give them too much grief, but really, Rick? Time to move on buddy.

I thought Jacob Dylan and the rest of the Wallflowers were going to wet their pants they were laughing so hard.

even george is starting to become "one of them"..he's doing the "top ten hissy fits" kind of shows with that hannah sung girl..(who's just GOD AWFUL)...i think the demographic is 14 year old girls, because of what they show...much drove the core audience away...they drove bradford how away, who i just saw signed with VH1...i miss JD Roberts former host of the power hour, who's now the white house correspondant for CBS..trippy...

Bradford just landed a job with VH1 in New York.
