Hmmm, I've always been partial to Membership although Escape is a really good song.
Apparently about the suicide of someone the Hip was touring with?
Although I don't know the story.
Somebody spill it.

Kinda wierd, but that and Chagrin were the first on PP I was attracted to.

PP is an exceptional album...and this song is certainly a big part of the reason why.
"You said that anytime of the day was fine.
You said that anytime of the night was also fine."
So simple.
So dead on.
One of my favorties.

... and Escape and Emperor Penguin are an incredible way to finish off the album.

This song doesn't really do that much for me. It's a good song, but nowhere near The Hip's best IMO. I was actually a little disappointed when they played it at the Hummingbird show I was at (I would have preferred a defferent lesser played song to be played in its place.)

Escape is currently leading the way in the "Vote for Kingston" thread.
Seems the boys would make a LOT of us happy if they busted out this one at the RMC. *hint* *hint* for you HDRC guys with access to Paul...

hey brazle.......
do you have any more information on the hip's encounters with kurt and the boys in nirvana??
i waswn't aware that they had ever met before!
-
lord brazle - 08-09-2004
I'm not even sure if they have or not. Maybe somebody else on here knows. I guess from the thread I posted the song's about the lead singer of Material Issue. I heard somewhere that it was about Kurt but I guess maybe that's wrong? Anybody reading this got a definite answer?

The boys were double booked with Nirvana at a club in the US just before Nirvana hit it big. Apparently, the bands got along well enough, but Gord only really remembers Kurt's behaviour that night as a little strange: He slept on a pool table in the back.

Yup, it's true. Here's a short passage from the book "Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance" (the best rock n' roll book I've ever read):
"At a club in Madison, Wisconsin, the Hip arrived to find they had been double-booked with an indie band called Nirvana. The road-weary young trio were there to meet with local producer Butch Vig before beginning work on their first major label album, and agreed to open the show. Downie recalls, "I remember playing pinball in the back after soundcheck, and what-would-be Kurt Cobain was lying on a table curled up in a ball. I was trying to make conversation-- 'pretty tired, huh?' They attracted a crowd of about 150, which dwindled down to about 40 by the time we went on. That was yet another of life's cruel lessons, never go on after a band from Seattle."

You know Steve, I'm starting to think maybe you know every SINGLE useless fact about this band.... Most people might say sad.. I'm going to go ahead and say you're my hero.
