Paul Langois Solo Album Opinions - lord brazle - 08-08-2004

This has been brought up before so I have searched for what has been said...

sfissel Wrote:I think if Paul's got any material the hip aren't using, he should do a solo album. He's got a great voice.

thecompletist Wrote:From what I've heard PAUL does have quite abit of solo stuff recorded and chances of a solo album are something he's talked about! (post TTH)

thecompletist Wrote:A friend of mine was at Darien backstage with a close friend of his who is a friend of Paul's thru family and the discussion actually came up and it was mentioned about how much material he had and that he was looking forward to releasing once the Hip were ....i can't actually type the word fin__d ugh?

So the question is do you think Paul should pull some solo stuff or not?

I think he should, he's got a killer voice.
I think it'd be some cool stuff. Thoughts?

Honestly....no.

He's great with the band, irreplaceable, but on his own....nahhh. I dont know if hes ever written lyrics or just done writing in general, but I dont know how strong it would be (a purely unfounded and assumptuous opinion). But yeah, with all honesty....sounds un-interesting.

He's an accomplished musician with producing experience: so, of course.

I can't think of any reasons against.

I love Paul's 'helium' voice, and his back-up vocals MAKE 50 Mission Cap. But does that make him a good songwriter? Downie's lyrics are a huge part of what defines the Hip as a phenomenal band, and there's no guarantee that Paul's solo stuff could hold a candle to that. But it WOULD be interesting.

(Imagine if Paul the solo artist broke big in the States? Oh, the irony  ).

I think would be kind of like Boyd Tinsley's solo project. The only reason he got any kind of publicity was becuase he played with Dave Mathews Band.

Is this a joke thread?

Exactly.

I'd definatly like to hear it. Maybe he could have GD do backup vocals.

How can you possibly judge a project before it's even been conceived?

True, every Canadian pub piece would start with "Tragically Hip guitarist..." but talent is talent.

I think it might be unfair to assume that Paul would only get press because of his Hip ties. It would help, but he'd sink or swim on his ability. I think he'd do just fine.

This is not meant to be a joke thread...
unless by saying that you meant it as your opinion on Paul's (possible) solo.

I actually remember a few commercials and VJs on MuchMusic specifically saying "Tragically Hip frontman's new album" when they were advertising for CMG (what little ads there were, apparently). So I think it's safe to assume that your average person who is not a hardcore Hip fan might not know who Paul Langois is and the ads would mention "The Tragically Hip."

But I have a feeling that if Langois did come out with a solo album, it would be good enough that not just Hip fans would buy it. I'm sure there were some who bought Coke Machine Glow because they thought Chancellor was a good song but didn't own any Hip albums. I mean, nobody can predict the outcome of a record, especially one that is right now not yet conceived. Nobody has heard any songs or anything. But nothing says that Langois would write the songs. Maybe Downie will write them and sing back-up, maybe the next Hip album will have a song on it entirely sung by Langois alone before he attempts a solo album.

This is all opinion now until he actually does it, but by hearing him as back-up vocals (and don't whip me for saying it) I think Langois has a better range than Downie. He might even end up being a better singer. Who knows?
