Question for the moms and/or dads out there - cferneyh - 07-30-2004

OK, so the Hip are rumoured to be in DC in Sept 25th. Wilco is in Virginia on the 27th. I've got a buddy trying to convince me to go to both (and DC isn't a short flight from Calgary). So here's my issue - my wife is due with our fist child on Oct 19. So would I be cutting it too close. I know she'd tell me to go, but would she just be doing it to be nice meanwhile cursing my name from now until the big day, or is three weeks ahead of the due date plenty of time????? I'm looking for opinions before I even bring it up and risk never meeting my own child!

it's really hit or miss. I know if it was MY husband in that predicment, I'd make sure his ass stayed close to home! Then again, I'd only be saying that because I couldn't go either! Smile

Honestly, you're probably okay to go...I'd say go...just have a cell phone handy incase she calls with an emerg. And be willing to catch the red eye back home if necessary.

I already know that I wouldn't be aloud to go... Sad

don't go. if something happened and you missed your child being born, you would regret it for the rest of your life.

a hip show is not a good reason to leave a 9 month pregnant woman home alone

also, she says that you can go now, but that will change some sept.

Not a father here, BUT, you might want to wait until you see the actual dates released before you even make it an issue. Mike's dates are very reliable, BUT you never know what might get thrown around last minute. If those dates get changed it might alter your plans, aka if it ends up on a weeknight. So it might be best to chill for a bit, see the dates and go from there. No sense getting her upset for nothing.

If the date does work out and you decide to go, you better hope she doesn't deliver early! Good luck.

You hear: "Sure honey - go to Washington. It is totally fine with me"

Married/dating life translation: "You god Da%n son of a goat, I have been carrying a human around inside of me for nine months and you think you can just go off and joyride around with your buddy as I sit here waiting to push a bowling ball out of something way to small that I could even figure out how it happens. I will tear your manhood off when you get home and put them in a jar on the fireplace mantle for every one to see.
"Oh wait - (she says) I am sorry honey, all I heard was Wilco and I got pissed. But you are talking about The Hip, of course then it is fine with me."

These are pretty funny replies. I wouldn't go.
Think about what's on the chopping block, man...
Worst-Case Scenario = You don't see your child take his/her first breath.
It's all choices, plain and simple....
Is it worth the risk?

My friend just delivered 3 weeks early...the pregnancy was very normal up to that point, then things changed. If I were you, I would stay home and be safe than sorry. Even if she did call you in an emergency, the flight is still a couple of hours...may be too late. There are plenty of Hip shows to see in the future, but only one chance to see your first child being born

Good luck! :thumb:

Also. just for the sake of your wife...she may start having preterm labor early and alot of various discomforts. It would be so much nicer for her if you were there to help her through, even if she doesn't deliver until the due date.

for sure...there will be tours for years to come that you can see. i wouldnt even dream of risking losing that moment

Thanks for the advice folks. My male work colleagues were telling me that since it is our first, she'll probably go late. My female colleagues told me that three weeks before due date is probably acceptable, but really pushing my luck. Mark - your advice really hit home - I'd regret it forever if I missed it, and I can always catch the Hip next tour. Thanks again!

It was my friends first also...and she is the one who delivered 3 weeks early.
