Moments in songs that grab you - The Nth Degree - 07-27-2004

Are there any moments in the Hip's songs that give you goosebumps or move you? For me there are several:

Goodnight Josephine- at the end of the song, the second time Gord says "goodnight" with more emphasis than the first

Emperor Penguin- the guitar break between "they won't do a damn thing you say" and "your voice is all detached"

Scared- "it's been a pleasure doing business with you"

Inevitability of Death- the way they have that short break between "Fantastic gap..........common space" on the second verse.

Bobcaygeon- "that night in Toronto", makes me always think of my first trip down King St.

I have so many more....these are just a few that come to mind....

"That night in Toronto."

We were staying at a hotel next to Maple Leaf Gardens on the night of the last game there. The roads were blocked off and it was crazy. Police on horses were keeping people back from tearing down the doors.

Good One. For me Greasy Jungle where Gord starts off "Greasy Jungle Metropolis Noir....Easy tangles the easiest so far...Ahhhh.......Ahhhhhh.....Ahhhhh......Ahhhhhh........and then it climaxes with the bass quickly picking up steam to "I drove down your road to Hazeldean where I tasted, your fuenral homes sandwiches and coffee."

Awesome! The bass line in that song is amazing.

Also in Nautical when Gord D. and Gord S. belt out those fingernails, scratching on the hull.

The pick-up in Sherpa.

"Terry's gift..."

"And dissapointing you's gett'n me down" from ABAC as well as "No dress rehearsal, this is our life" live when Bobby comes in strong.

The Roxy's: "Well, don't ya think Girl ya push a bit to fast... (BA-BOOM!)"

The open to Save The Planet

The flute aided outro's on PP

The turn in Dark Canuck

And quite literally hundreds more.

Man, you know those are good moments when just reading it and hearing it in my head gives me the shivers. That IOD one is incredible and the Nautical one always gets me too ('n since I'm really anal, it's "fingernails scratching on MY hull"... sorry)

Another one for me is in Yawning or Snarling when the pre-chorus kicks in when Gord sings "walk past damaged goods and ugly trends" (in the first verse) and then "take a look at this photograph". Both of those are great. I think Yawning or Snarling is one the Hips most underrated songs.

I for sure love the Joesephine one in the original post.

But I would have to say in Lake Fever when Paul sings "I wanna be nobody without you." is my favourite moment in a hip song. It's my favourite line and just so good. Simple and says everything.
That whole song is so good.

Also when Gordie sings "Bobby Orr" in fireworks too. Just because i think it's cool.

Nautical Disaster:

"And we headed for home" as Rob's solo starts.

- lilbones - 07-27-2004

One moment that jumps out at me right now is 'well there's love, and there's hope' from Leave.

Also, as many have mentioned, the outro on Nautical.

Also, the "But I thought you beat the death of inevitability to death just a little bit" refrain at the end of IOD, which starts with the instruments down, then builds to mayhem ... yes. Amazes me every time.

Yeah, that's so great. Equalled by the "Blind feed the blind whispering things like 'on the money' and 'Bullseye'" from the same song.

Gord at his poetic best.

my favourite is from sherpa

we said we must be friends or die
and we've died a thousand times since then

also, this is a classic for me

Late-breaking story on the CBC,
A nation whispers, "we always knew that he'd go free"

- direwolf74 - 07-27-2004

the way Gord sings "it's a museum and we're all locked up in it after dark".

As mentioned above, Steve Berlin's flute solo during the outtro to Save the Planet.

the bridge in Bobcaygeon

the bridge in Vaccination Scar

the bridge in Summer's Killing Us

(what can I say, I'm a big fan of bridges)

The pedal steel solo during the outtro to Emperor Penguin.

Robby's emotional guitar playing in Nautical Disaster, not to mention Fight, Mean Streak, Gus, Tiger the Lion, Apartment Song, and a handful of others.

The siren in the background of Wind Down the Pines.

and hundreds more...

the hypnotic reverie which ends "stay" --("not for the sake of balance- but balancing") that whole section--i get lost in that one everytime---gords best ever rhyme---"the ice is coverin the trees...and one of'em interconnecting,....with my chevrolet caprice"....and they way they rip into the ending right afterwards--musically bouncing off each other.---------that moment in "the rules" --"it'll put the dog out of a job,---and makes traffic stop so little thoughts can safely get acroossss"---------------------------The harmony and guitar work all over ultra mundane but specifically"you looked at me like i was eating runny eggs in slow mowshuuuuuunnnnnnn!!"-------the slide guitar on vaccination scar!!----------"kurt cobain reincarnated"--------"drivin down,, a cordouroy road,........weeds standin shoulder high!"--------------------------------------"dont wipe your asses with your sleeeeeeve!"---and the incredible DIRE WOLF--my candidate for best damned hip song ever.
