After one concert and several listens to the CD, is there any better song to close the night out than "Goodnight, Joesephine"? I don't just mean from this album, but from any album the Hip have ever recorded? I personally think it would make a fantastic closer, or at least one one the last few songs in the encore.

i love the song. it would be a good closer and a good opener, too.

picture it.... the house lights go out. out walks the band and a single, white spotlight hits gord and he sings "i remember a girl on her cell phone... " and then the lights come on when the bands kicks in.

At the Canada Day show I expected it towards the end, not the last song, but to kinda wind you down before New Orleans, but they played it early.

The greatest Hip closer has to be 'Opiated.' I'd rate 'Joe' ahead of 'Wind Down the Pines' (easily their worst album-ender), 'Eldorado,' and possibly 'Impossibilium.' But does it really top 'Emperor Penguin,' 'The Dark Canuck,' 'Unplucked Gems,' or 'Put It Off?' I dunno.

One thing's for sure---they know how to end a record. :thumb:

Sure, I like 'Josephine.' I especially dig the when Gord turns the melody into a minor key as the band kicks in about one third of the way through. But I don't rate it as one of the Hip's all-time great closers.

The only stinker of the album-enders is 'Wind Down the Pines,' but then, that whole album is a disaster... Cry

Yup, I can't stand Music@work. Granted, the title track is killer and there are some other good moments (Train Overnight, The Completists, Sharks, The Bear) but on the whole, I find it turgid, lyrically obtuse, melodically unfocused, and reeking of 'studio.' In other words, it's progressive rock...a genre that many people dig, but I can't abide.

I think even the Hip recognize that that record wasn't tight enough. Downie gave interviews where he talked about rolling into the studio with fragments of lyrics---i.e., no songs!---and trying desperately to conjure something as the other band members brought in THEIR musical fragments. And in interviews leading up to IVL Downie kept emphasizing 'preparation,' i.e., having the songs in place BEFORE hitting the studio. That makes sense to me---the studio is the place to get tracks on tape, but it's hard to capture energetic rock and roll when everything is 'layered' and multitracked in a laborious studio creative process.

So Music@work is their worst album by a country mile, IMHO.
