First off, I'm a long time reader, few time poster...great forum! :thumb:
I was in The Future Shop (Saskatoon) the other day and to my delight, they were playing IBE (quite loudly, in fact!) over the store speakers. While making my way to the video games section, as expected, I came across a number of young ones playing the various consoles and checking out the games. It was at that time that Melt came on and I had a little "uh oh" moment as Gordie belted out the F' bomb! Then of course, Copenhagen comes on with the F' bomb triple play and I look around at the kids and employees...no reaction! I coulda swore that they woulda yanked the disk or turned it down, but they didn't. Very cool! 8)
That leads me to think that Gordie has some sort of immunity or something when it comes to swearing. When I think back to The Hip songs I've heard on the radio, I can't think of any that have been bleeped (like Locked, for example). Have any of you noticed this incredible uncensored phenom that is The Tragically Hip?

That would never be blaring in the US without it being censored. I've noticed that while living here. Growing up in Canada, and listening to Edge 102, they've always played the nasty words on the radio. Censorship isn't that big of an issue in Canada, and I think that rocks.

'Swear words' can be poetry...when well thought out and used precisely, or sometimes even just spurr of the moment(on occasion)they can have a lovely and lasting appeal. For shock value or even beauty.

Nothing conveys genuine emotion like a swear word. Ever seen a dubbed movie on TV? You really realize the value of swearing when somebody stubbs their toe, or watches their wife get blown away in a drive by shooting and then utters: "Aw Shucks, Gosh Darn it all to heck! Gosh Darn it all to heck!"
Sometimes, swearing just fits.

:lol: I know what you mean. What I find most amusing is when TV stations come up with the most creative "insults", like "airhole", or "bimbo". Makes me laugh every time.

Ya I totally agree.
Look at Trailer Park Boys. I live in BC and we see that at around 9pm on what is essentially basic cable.
CBC News rarely bleeps swears from the newscasts....
its fairly common on regular tv.
we also see boobies on tv from time to time and people dont have a conniption

OK, who's seen the movie "Johnny Dangerously"? That movie takes the cake for swearing substitutions.

The difference with Gord swearing compared to other bands, is because he is not vulgar and he doesn't say "F**k the world", I hate all those mother f**kers", etc. It's waaaaaaay more poetic than that. it's really not that bad. It's more funny than anything.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind it at all. I use it all the time. I'll agree that the way he uses it is less vulgar than a lot of the other stuff that's out there. But an F bombs an F bomb, no matter where it shows up, well except when it shows up with the word mother, that one seems a bit harsher.
Anyway, I've noticed too on the radio here in Canada the Hip get away with the odd swear without getting censored.
