Top 20 Canadian bands of the last 20 years - Dudley - 07-02-2004

This program was on today and I think it is safe to say that the people at much more music are smoking crack.

20.) Sloan--- I like them.
19.) Maestro Fresh Wes-----Was cool back in 6th grade.
18.) Diane Krall- I really like her voice.
17.) Platinum Blondes--- Not a big fan of hair bands.
16.) Our Lady Peace--- meah.
15.) Allanah Miles--- WHAT??? Come on now that is offside.
14.) Blue Rodeo--- Great Canadian Band.
13.) Neil Young--- Hmmm shouldn't one of Canada's living icons be a little higher on the list???
12.) Cory Hart--- Ummm ahead of Blue Rodeo and Neil Young??
11.) KD Lang--- Okay I am sensing a pattern of sucking going on this list.
10.) Nelly Furtado--- Alright she is not to bad. Heck some of her music is just down right catchy.
9.) Nickleback--- NO THAT IS IT, COME ON!!!!! I would prefer platinum blondes.
8.) The Tragically Hip--- Okay they are better than nickleback that is good. But they should be top 5 at least.
7.) Barenaked Ladies--- Good music but not better than the hip.
6.) AVRIL "FREAKING" LAVIGNE--- This one was the gag of the whole list. Better than Neil and TTH and BNL and Blue Rodeo??? Is much more music taking bribes from her agents??
5.)Sarah Maclachlan--- MMMMMM Sarah you are so hot and you can sing.
4.) Allanis Morrisette--- Ok maybe number 12 or 13 but not #4.
3.) Brian Adams--- Has done alot for the Canadian music industry..... um yeah.
2.)Shania Twain--- Get the F*&$ outta here with that bull@!$%. The anger sharks are swimming in my brain.
1.) Celine Dion--- Kudos on selling like a bajillion records but I will stick with the hip.

Not even mentioned: Rush, Headstones, The Guess Who, Great Big Sea, and list goes on and on.

I'd have Alanis Morissette up there in the top five for sure. The Hip should be ahead of BNL for sure. You knew Shania and Celine were going to be the top two and you can't really argue if it is about record sales but...whatever. Cory Hart has no right to be on the list; he is a joke!

You can't make lists because there's no set criteria. Is it the best band for the longest time? most records sold? critical acclaim? cultural impact?

- Rye - 07-02-2004

They've showed this alot on MMM over the past year (at least). I'd say it's more "Most Successful Canadians Internationally" than anything....it's just a list, I wouldn't stress over it too much. Tongue

You know what just threw me for a loop?
Half of those on the list ARE NOT BANDS! Confusedcratch:

- direwolf74 - 07-03-2004

Just 20? Damn, tough question. Ok, I take it solo artists don't count, so here's my list of "bands" in no particular order. Just a warning though-- I may go a wee bit past 20.

The Hip
The Weakerthans (second best band on the planet. Trust me.)
Blue Rodeo
Headstones
The Lowest of the Low
Rheostatics
Blackie & the Rodeo Kings
Junkhouse
Sloan
The Watchmen
Skydiggers
54-40
Cowboy Junkies
Big Sugar
Weeping Tile (Sarah Harmer's old band)
Spirit of the West
The Odds
The Pursuit of Happiness
13 Engines
The Northern Pikes
The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir (featuring Chris Brown & Kate Fenner)
D.O.A.
The Grapes of Wrath
Treble Charger (back when they were actually good)
Doughboys (pop/punk before pop/punk became popular)
Eric's Trip
The Cash Brothers
The Mahones
Crash Vegas

whew....there's probably a whole bunch I'm missing, but there ya have it. The best of the best!

what a terrible list

- Beat - 07-03-2004

I'd never heard of The Weakerthans Direwolf74, but I downloaded a few songs and they sound great :thumb:

- tragicallymike - 07-03-2004

the weakerthans have put out 3 solid solid solid albums! A big Weakerthanks to them.

- direwolf74 - 07-03-2004

Oh, and you're absolutely correct. The people at Muchmoremusic are indeed smoking crack. That list they came up with is horrendous. Nickelcrap? Celine? Avril? Platinum Blonde?? You've gotta be kidding me. Thanks Muchmusic, but I'll stick to my own list.

Nice to see some fellow Weakerthans fans in here! They're an incredible band. One of the best this country has ever produced. And I love the fact that John K. Samson always talks about Gord Downie in interviews. A couple years ago on their website, the Weakerthans had Coke Machine Glow on their "Essential Summer Reading" list. I thought that was cool.

Reconstruction Site was the best album of last year. Without fail. Go see them live, because it adds that much more.

One of the highlights of 2003 live music experience was when they pulled Sarah Harmer on the Elixir stage to sing Bendiction.

Cheers

Pat

Oh man, that would have been amazing! I'm glad you got to witness that!

LOWEST OF THE LOW...they should be up there, just aren't that well know aside from Southern Ontario, Western New York, and Vancouver...
