Thoughts on the new songs? -
Tthip - 06-24-2004
Someone might as well start the thread.
After hearing the sound bites on the rounder and that other site - I was scared I was going to hate this album.
Damn - this album rocks.
It really grabs the hell out of you after the first listen.
How many albums can you say do that?
Just two quick observations after several listens.
10. The Heart of the Melt
This song I think will definately be a show closer.
Reminds me of Fire in the Hole Part 2
8. As Makeshift As We Are
9. Mean Streak
I do not remember which one, but one of these two is SO much like Vapour Trails. That is what I hear.

Dead on. They closed in Edmonton with Heart of the Melt and it was intense!

In Calgary they closed the main set with this tune and it was very high tempo and high energy. It definitely fits in with Fire in the Hole and The Wherewithal as one of the heaviest songs they've ever written. I love it!

Yeah I agree.. Mean Streak has some 'VT' in it, but is a very good song in its own right.
The album does grab you right away, though how it sounds to me now and what it'll sound like to me 20 listens from now are totally different stories! I love it!
Positively buying it on the 29th...

"Gus" sounds just like it came off Road Apples. Well minus Gord's changed singing style. The solos in it remind me of "Fight".
...wicked awesome

Just back from the Gym and 40 minutes of IBE. One full listen and wow!
Great Album...
Vaccination & Summer make way more sense surrounded by the other songs now. I wasn't 100% on Summer and now... it rocks... and Scar as well...just got better
Now
GUS is another ball game... as mentioned a lost Road Apple maybe.. but for me one of the "strongest" hip recordings I've heard in years... classic bluesy Hip, simple beat and some strong Langlois/Sinclair back up which I love... Downie's voice is good but i always love hearing Paul chime in over top... a 4 minute rocker from start to end!
You're Everywhere (Ballroom) really fits into the album also and again the back up vocals add to this one with the guitar work standing out nicely.
You won't believe
"Heart of the Melt"...it very well maybe Fire in the Hole
part 2... nice closer for sure!!!
Are We Family - a softer number with abit of a "gems feel"...it's nice to hear Gord D clearly on this one... great vocal delivery here...
The unmentioned songs are good but need more listens before I can comment on them.... the overall album works really well....
.....compared to others it appears i will need less listening to reach my usual state of bliss 8)
once i hear them all live... it will all change....I'll be back here "editing"...
meansteak has been repeating a few times while I type this and now i like it more...

cratch: hell there's no butts wiggl'in on this baby!
I CAN"T FREAK'IN WAIT TILL TUESDAY & THURSDAY NEXT WEEK :jump

Back in March on the NG I wrote "I hope I hate it at first" since that was how it all started for me really.
I was 16, a casual Hip fan, picked up "Trouble" and just despised everything except ABAC. I now love everything about "Trouble" and count it among my favourite... well anything and everything really, I just love it.
I don't know if I hated the songs from IBE at first listen, but they certainly rubbed me wrong. I've since really come to appreciate them more, and even the brief clip of "Summer" live on CTVNN impressed the hell ot of me.
Like Casey says, the band is like fine wine. And just as they get better with time, their songs are best heard aged. It may not be radio friendly right away, but man when it grabs you...
IBE has now officially grabbed me.

I didn't DL the Album, but heard most of it after getting a sneak preview of the World Album Premiere which is airing on Radio Sunday Night. I of course made a copy so I could give the tunes a good listen. The three songs I haven't heard are Nashville, Are We Family and Goodnight Josephine.
All I can say is WOW. This is gonna be a listen from start to finish album. My early favourites are One Night in Copenhagen and as Makeshift As We Are. They are just straight ahead rock tunes. The Guitars on this album are incredible. I think after years of trying.... this is as close to capturing their live sound as possible. I hope they stick with Adam Kasper in the future. It is in my opinion the best produced Hip Album ever.
Other favourites include Heart of the Melt and Mean Streak. New Orleans is Beat is also a lot better than I expected from hearing the 30 second clip. A lot of the songs on this album jump right out at you at first listen. I can't wait to see what I think of it a month from now. My whole perspective will likely have changed.
My least favourite (of the 10 songs I have heard) is Summer is Killing Us. Good Song, I just hate the way it starts out.
The fact that I haven't heard all of the songs is still gonna make it sweet to pick up the album on Tuesday. I can't wait to hear Josephine!
To those of you that haven't heard it yet.......the long wait has not been in vain. I think the majority will agree that this is/will be one of the Hips strongest albums ever.

I finally caved and listened to the new album. I figure that since there are listening parties tonight and I have heard the new disc live in Edmonton a couple days won't hurt. I feel guilty. But only kind of, because this disc is amazing! It has been said already, but unlike most Hip albums, this one knocks you out the very first time you hear it. So Cool!
