Will the Jet fly? - Roy-at-tth - 09-13-2002

Well, needless to say - and I know there will be those that disagree, but 'It's a good life if you don't weaken' couldn't have gotten the results the Hip hoped it would. So the question is...

Will Silver Jet? Can the jet fly the hip to #1 on the charts?

I would say so, it has the NOIS feel to it, the certain funk, beat, and overall awesomeness of any other hit Hip song.

So whats your guys' take on it?

- coolcatmissy - 09-13-2002

Yeah, Good Life's an excellent song, but not prime single material. I honestly think Jet will be much more well-received.

- mrlayance - 09-13-2002

The first time I ever heard IVL, I thought to myself, "WHy isn't this song the first single?"

I think that the song will get played alot on the radio and if the video is good on Much and Much More Music. Hopefully alot more than Good Life.

yeah
when i first heard the cd, i thought that silver jet was the most stand-out song. i think it's gonna get a hell of a lot of air time

"Can the jet fly the hip to #1 on the charts?"

What charts are you speaking of? Radio, cable TV (Much, MTV), print, electronic media?

The Hip may never top the charts again, but I take heart in the fact that an elite, enlightened, wise and superior group of humans is willing to buy the CDs, purchase the concert tickets, follow the group across long miles, and would imitate barnyard animals (well, I would for sure) to say hi backstage after the show and discuss any and all aspects of life...

I'm not from NF, but a popular phrase out there is "There's two kinds of people. Newfies and them that wish they was." Same applies to Hip fans. As has also been stated, "If you don't like Hank Williams, then you can kiss my ass."

Is there a point here? Silver Jet kicks ass, and I have had the fortune to see and hear it performed live in San Diego, Anaheim and Walkerton ON this summer. Can the jet fly the Hip to #1? They rule either way here - I embrace this work regardless of the opinions of the f*ckle masses.

Sorry guys, but I'm going to have to say no to this one. On my first listen to IVL, the two songs that struck me as single material were "The Darkest One" and "All Tore Up". I know alot of diehard Hip fans will say that "All Tore Up" is too one dimensional, but that's the kind of song that the lukewarm fans will enjoy and make them go out and buy the album. I think "Silver Jet" is a great song, but it just doesn't strike me as the type of song that is going to vault IVL to the top of the charts suddenly. Who knows though, maybe it will get alot of play on MuchMusic since they will be doing a Canadian tour at the time it comes out.

- coolcatmissy - 09-13-2002

I'll give you All Tore Up, but I don't know about The Darkest One. Then again, any Hip song is better than the crap on radio nowadays.

- MikeS - 09-13-2002

I'd have to agree with Rye on this one. While Silver Jet has everything a die-hard would want in a Hip track (eg. awesome guitar hook, vivid lyrical imagery), I think Darkest One would have the potential for more universal appeal, particularly on the "top 40"-format radio stations...

But then what do I know...I originally thought "Grace, too" was a weak lead-off single..

I'm just saying it'd be nice if the Hip make it to #1 on the charts (any charts, you name it). Its always good when your favorite bands makes it up theres - it'd be motivational for the band and it'd bring some newcomers to hip fandom.

Its not a big deal, simple question really...

- AmbitionlessHipster - 09-13-2002

Maybe I am just saying this because it was the first song that stuck to me off of the album, but I thought that Leave would be a super song to set out there for all to listen... But, then again, who cares about any song being on the radio... just as long as WE (das fans) have the album and can listen to it!

- boot - 09-14-2002

yeah, I don't think Silver Jet's gonna cut it. Honestly... I think "Good Life" is one of the strongest songs on the album, but it's not your typical Hip song, and it's too slow for most of the casual fans out there.... (but I also thought the same about "Ahead by a century").

Silver Jet's great, and I think it'll create a buzz (esp. if the video is as good as they want it to be), but I don't think it's got enough to make it to #1 on any chart.... it's not the breakthrough they're looking for.

If I had to pick one off the album to make a great single? Dire Wolf. Again, it's an 'out there' song... but it might just be 'epic' enough. Funny thing is... Sam Roberts, who's opening on the theatre tour... take his video for "Brother Down", and put the Hip in there instead, and I think you've got a great video for "Dire Wolf".

- Beat - 09-14-2002

Unfortunately no Hip song has ever made the Dutch charts yet....Sad

- hipkid33 - 09-15-2002

I feel that "Jet" is the best cut on IVL, and I hope it does wonders on the charts. Especially after seeing it live at Darien Lake. Personally, and I think this goes without saying, "Jet" and any other future song could bomb, but it wont change how I feel about the band. I'll continue to go to the shows, buy the records, and lend support. No chart has EVER directed my attention!

Cheers!
Chad

I, too, will have to agree with Rye. The Darkest One is in my opinion the best IVL track and would make one damn fine single. All Tore Up is good single material as well. While It's A Good life is a good song I don't think it was the best choice for the first single. Silver Jet will do better than It's A Good Life but I don't think that it will top any charts.

- coolcatmissy - 09-15-2002

Tops MY charts. Tongue
