Help with Trudeau-Downie "Looking for a place to happen - Stephen Dame - 06-13-2004

A question has arisen as part of something I'm writing, hoping maybe somebody can help out... Smile

Gord has referenced Trudeau, both Pierre and Michel, many times on stage. And of course there's the "Bemoaned Trudeau" lyric from "Inch and Hour..." but I'm wondering if anybody has heard/read/been told if "Looking for a place to happen" has ever shown links to Pierre Trudeau... maybe during a rant on the 90/91 tour stops before FC?

I know "Looking" is about Europeans landing and the tragedy of the accepted and real history of North America, but PET often used the phrase in different forms during the '74 election campaign: "Wage and Price control is a doomed policy looking for a place to happen..." etc.

Anybody know of any link between Gord's "Looking" and Pierre's?

Any info, smart assed remarks or filthy limericks would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The end of At The Hundredth Meridian on Nov 16 1998 Gord said "Michel Trudeau come around." this was several days after we found out he was killed in an avalanche.

Cool, just wondering if there's any pre FC references to Trudeau and the line "Looking for a place to happen..." If not, it may all just be a coincidence.

Gord does have a thing with Michel though, he's done the whole "He struggled, and then he ceased to struggle... like young Trudeau!" a few times. I haven't heard the one you mentioned though... sounds cool.

I'll tell ya what I'm up to when you tell us who you are...

I am not too sure what it is off of, and dont even know what song it is part of,

but I remember a bootleg where Gord says:

Jimmy hOffa thought Robert Kennedy was a queer!...
Brian Milroney thinks Pierre Trudeau is ruining his legacy...
Vengence is a waste of time when reaped on those who, if left alone, would... ( I forget the ending here)

Don't know if it helps, but its a reference.

The Completist...completely about Michel Trudeau and his death. I remember hearing Gord sing it during Nautical at Woodstock. "He struggled, and then he ceased to struggle".

How he came up with "clearly lifeless barefeet, and dogs just trained to sniff" is beyond me.

Well, I'll give you a second hint; If I announced it, I would be incessantly bombarded with PMs and emails and I'd never be able to come on here again....

So for now, let's pretend "I got nothing to offer"...

Please don't think me rude here, but I must ask. All smart assed remarks aside...why would you mention that you may be someone who is "connected" (for lack of a better word), if you don't want to reveal who you are? Why not allow us to remain in our world of blissful ignorance?

Just curious... Confusedcratch:
