Hey Casey! What was the Hugh Dillon/Paul link? - Stephen Dame - 06-11-2004

I think a while ago you told me about a story you read detailing how Paul was bullied by Hugh Dillon during their school days.

Given their new producer/artist relationship, this seems more interesting.

Do you remember where you saw that, or any other details of the story?

Yeah, it was from the Canadian rock biography "Have Not Been the Same", which I fully encourage everyone here to read. Anyway, here's the paragraph in question from page 617-618:

"After providing his encouragement, Manning (Davis Manning) dropped out of the picture by 1985, at which point Sinclair and Downie brought in their new housemate Paul Langlois on rhythm guitar. He had been playing in a band with Hugh Dillon- an unusual turn of events since Langlois had initially been the target of the singer's bullying at hockey games during their high school days."

I can remember an article in which Hugh Dillon either nostalgically or jealously remembered a few of the guys in the Hip as simply being customers for his drugs in High School.

I remember reading that article as well, but it wasn't a jealousy thing at all. I remember talking to Hugh once after a Headstones show in Calgary and we started chatting about the latest Hip album at the time (Trouble at the Henhouse). He mentioned how much he loved the Hip as a band and as people. He's known them since childhood and they're all good friends. The Hip actually gave the Headstones their first big break by inviting them to open a show at Fort Henry in '93. And I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I also heard from various sources that Downie and his wife helped Hugh through his rehab when he was having heroin problems.

"I don't think you need an anvil to fall on your head to realize what a one way ticket heroin is."
