When the Hip finally do decide to retire to their nice Ontario homes, how do you want them to do it.......

I would want them to do it much in the same way as The Band....with a huge concert with the artists that have influenced them over the years.

I just bought the Last Waltz so that made me think of how i would like to see the hip go when they finally do, and lets hope for another 60 or 70 yrs and the hip are well into their 100s :jump :thumb:

not breaking up retiring...then again bands dont retire anymore do they...they just play till they drop dead on stage ala Rolling Stones Confusedcratch:

But hypothetically how would you want to see them bow out when they are ready?

If you objectively listen to the coked out, young and wreckless Stones, compared to the Steel Wheelchair Stones, you'll notice that the two don't even compare. Once the Stones sobered up and began perfecting tunes they'd been playing live and practising for thirty years, their live sound improved Ten Fold. Most great bands gel and feed off each other over time, with live shows improving along the way. It's usually not degenerating talent or ability that leads to the end of great bands, it's ego, burn-out or complacency.

As Casey has said many times, "the boys are like fine wine," and I really do think they'll only get better with time.

I think the key to when they'll break up is in "Emergency:"

Until it's no longer fun... until we're no longer one.

As for whose next... well, I played Clarinet in middle school, who wants to back me up?

the guys all seem to get along. no apparent bickering or bad egg in the band. gords solo stuff used to get me worried. in almost all cases when the lead guy wants to experiment and do a solo gig and it turns into a success they leave the band. its like as soon as they know they can stand on there own feet... see ya. but in gords situation i dont get that anymore.
but if it HAD to end. i'd have the tour bus break down after the last show and they'd play an acoustic set in my basement and the beers would flow like wine. errrr something like that.
but may it be a long long time away!!!

Agreed. But unlike the Stones, the Hip just keep getting better as songwriters. Compare the songs from Up to Here to the songs on In Violet Light, and it's no contest. Musically and lyrically, IVL wins hands down. The Stones on the other hand have gotten progressively worse as the years have gone by. They haven't released a decent album since 1978's "Some Girls". It's really kind of sad.

I've often compared the Hip with Pearl Jam in regards to longevity. Aside from drummer Matt Cameron, PJ still consists of the same line-up as when they started, but since Cameron was a good friend of the Pearl Jam guys to begin with, I still consider him to be an unofficial long-standing member. But getting back to my point, the guys in PJ write songs as a collective, and there doesn't seem to be one particular individual who dictates the band's direction, which is very similar to the way in which the Hip operate. My ultimate wet dream is for these two bands to do a double-bill tour of North America together, because I think they share similar sensibilities when it comes to making music and touring. And I think Eddie and Gord would get along famously. The Hip could open for PJ in the States, and then PJ could come up here and open for Das Hips in Canada. It could happen, couldn't it??

Ya know Casey, you may have hit on a major key: Song writing as a collective.

While I don't agree that the Stones song writing ability has denegrated THAT much (Mick and co. weren't that great to begin with, but Rock aint a meritocrisy, and they could/can certainly write catchy rock/pop) the one thing that does seperate them is the fact that the Hip do write all their own stuff, whereas the Stones have relied a lot more on covers, outside writers, and solo writing efforts.

Perhaps the fact that the craft is shared, and each guy can legitamately call each song "his" plays a role in cohesiveness and longevity.

I've started building up my Live DVD collection. I have that kick ass Zepplin one, a very Good Grateful Dead -Farewell To Winterland, and The Last Waltz (The Bands Last show as a quintet) but there will always be that void of no Hip DVD no matter how many other kick ass bands i get, the hip wont be there. We should get a petition going and send it to the hip, in a beggar like fashion.

But everyon makes good points about the hip, i like discussion :thumb: :jump

The Hip need to release 2 DVDs as far as I'm concerned (or at least a double DVD). One with all of the videos and interviews and all the other goodness that we all want to see, and another one of a live concert. And I don't wanna any of that cut and paste live stuff, it's gotta be one solid live show, from beginning to end. That would make me the happiest guy on earth.

My biggest fear is that the hip will become to my children what he stones were to me. My parents favorite band. A bunch of old men, hanging on way to long that I just didnt understand or couldn't get into. Having said that, I think its inevitable and hope they dont stop for many years to come.

If it were up to me they would tour forever like the Dead. The dead are still incredible. They are still doing 3 hour plus concerts and sound tight man. The Hip should tour Canada every year like the Dead did in California. I think there is enough hipsters or hipheads or what ever we call ourselves to sustain a Canadian tour every year. These guys are fantastic musicians and could easily pull this off. I would book all my vacations around their tours, already do for the every second year tour. They should play until someone dies. Cry

The dead are still touring even without Garcia, Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule is playing with them on their current tour....if they hit toronto I'm for sure going to be checking that show out.
