am I the only one... - Roy-at-tth - 04-18-2004

Vac scar is a great song and all, but as far as singles go, i don't think its the greatest...i mean...the singing isn't the greatest....and to a non-die-hard hip fan it isn't the greatest...

i love the song, but...i dunno, they could have done better. Don't you think?

- mmilberg - 04-18-2004

I don't even like Vaccination Scar at all.

I'm scared about the new album if the label thinks this is the catchiest song on it.

- MattPower - 04-18-2004

I think the song is good, but not great. I find Gord's singing way too mono-tone and it doesn't really have a good chorus.

I still think it's a good song though. It's better than anything on IVL I think.

I agree, the singing is interesting....

To me - Stephen Dame - 04-18-2004

To me, it's a statement song, as expressed in the VS Speculation thread below. Gord's tone fits with the spirit of the song. It's not a "You're imagination's having puppies" type imaginative number about a personal experience, it's actually more of a dark-sided pop rock song about a political stance.

It's got some really great guitar work, some very nice references, It's the kina song where you can hear it and then go look stuff up in an Encyclopedia... which is why I love this band so much and dislike the TheoryofaNickleCredd ilk. And I smile everytime I hear the "Life is forgetting" stuff, because all of us who caught shows in 2002 know where that came from.

That's why I love the song. REALLY looking forward to IBE.

I dunno...seems to me there where lots of people on this board a few months ago that were pining for a straight-ahead rock and roll classic Hip single to lead off the new disc...in the RA/FC vein...

To me, VS delivers exactly that...

I guess you can't please everyone...

Chalk me up as one of the happy ones with it. I love it.

I have some friends that are casual hip fans and weren't super hot on IVL, they all love the new tune so I think it's a great choice as a single. Course I haven't heard all the others so maybe I'll change my mind then. Wink

- ShannonW - 04-18-2004

Yes. I am very happy with the song. Back in the more rockin' days, a lot of the songs weren't really heavy on the vocal skills, but more just straightforward rockin. All of my quasi fan convert friends really like the new song too!

I'm with the "good but not great" camp. This song is a rocker, but it doesn't flow as well as anything from, say, Road Apples. It just sounds a little laboured. The vocals are complex and the lyrics are too obscure to comfortably sing along with. It is true that challenging rock music will always have a place in an intelligent world, but this one just doesn't pull it off all that well. After IVL, which was for me a huge letdown in terms of feeling like it sounded like they sat down and consciously decided to make it loud and hard and it lost a lot because of the deliberateness, this song is a positive step. It reminds me of M@W, which I liked - except M@W stands alone as a complex art-rock album and the concept is hardly new for this band. I hope the new album just lets it all hang out, but when the single is under three minutes long, you get the impression that the new album, like IVL, might be too tight and methodical and deliberate for its own good.

- thipfan73 - 04-18-2004

It's very cool but I'm sure they can do better. I'm hoping for some better stuff on the album.

- VioletlightHeron - 04-18-2004

I'm in the "interesting sound, good single" camp. I am intrigued by the direction Gord's lyrics seem to be turning towards, more subtly political and deliberately vague in an artistic kind of fashion. If the new album turns to towards IVL musically, I'll be happy and excited. I love the rocking sound of the single and the way Gord's lyrics make me scratch my head Tongue

I'm with the "I like it, its ol' school, better than that other NickleTheoryDefault crap" group... the one thing that catches me awkwardly is Gord's singing... it seems very agressive, no?

Yeah, but I think that's the point. I for one like Gord's teeth gnashed ANGRY act. It works well in "Cordelia" (...don't Really need!") and "Fire in The Hole."

I like it, it's a great rocking tune. Combined with Joe and Ballroom, this album is looking great , as usual.. Irish Hip Guy has the best idea , here's an excerpt from a post of his review of the Whistler show.

Which new songs stood out?
Fighter was by far my favorite of the new songs. It totally rocked. It will be a classic Hip live tune.

Makeshift was another highlight. It had a good rockin beat with Gord and Paul doing some great backups in the chorus.

Another stand out was What's up With Gus. A song Gord described as a song about a Polar Bear named Gus.

I'm getting excited thinking about the possibilities. :thumb:
