CLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE - thecompletist - 04-14-2004
For those of you who live in the Toronto area and absolutely love live music... this is really something special. For almost a year now I have been going down to THE PHOENIX on the 3rd Thursday of every month to see a CLASSIC ALBUM recreated....
I am not talking a cover band either. I am talking about some top "session" musicians and other known artists such as:
Kevin Young - (Moist, David Usher)
Phil Naro - (Talas, Peter Criss, 24K)
Marty Morin - (Klaatu, Goddo, Toronto)
Jeff Pearce - (Rye, Moist, David Usher)
Kenny Maclean - (Platinum Blonde)
Trent Carr - (Headstones)
Tim White - (Headstones)
...and so on
The whole concept is quite unique... they take a Classic Album usually from the 70's and play it "note for note" from beginning to end. They do not talk or anything. If it takes 10 people to recreate Rumours by Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin IIII then that's what they do...the realism of how close it sounds is unbelieveable.....then they introduce the band after the album and do 4-5 encore songs.
I have never heard music this good for $15! The venue is great and the people gathered at each event are only there for one thing - The Music
The owner was featured on CBC's show VENTURE and also started a spin off show each month called MODERN ALBUMS LIVE.... I just saw U2's Joshua Tree - I can't even say how good it was and before that was NIRVANA's NEVERMIND.
The 1 Year Anniversary is coming up next Thursday and
the Album being recreated in it's entirety is PINK FLOYD's IIII THE WALL IIII
So... just looking for others who enjoy this as much as I do or for anyone who needed to know about it....

Ya most people still don't get what they are doing. It's not even close to seeing a cover band. They do not use any overdubs, tapes or what ever... they just pack the stage with TALENT and let the music happen exactly the way you would hear it on a CD....

If you truly love live music and have yet to catch on to this series...this would be a hell of performance to start with. You won't believe the Guitar work... the voice of Plant is Dead-ON... and you will witness a drummer who has a style of Thunder much like the man himself....
This is the one. Make the trip... only for the music though... nothing else

Personal Album Review
The depth of this album always astounds me. Jimmy Page's production really shines on this one. Each song is like its own entity, with a soundscape that is completely unique. Especially "The Rain Song". Listening to that song is like going on a journey. All of the cuts on this album are classic. You get the best of both worlds. The harder Zep that everyone loves, but also the mellowness of songs like "No Quarter". And who can forget "D'yer Maker". The fact that they pulled that off is amazing in itself. In my opinion, Led Zeppelin peaked with this album. "The Song Remains The Same" is a great way to make that statement. It just ushers in what you know will be the best album they ever made. Don't get me wrong, ZOSO was great, and so was II. But ladies and gentlemen, this one surpasses them all.

Personal Album Review
With this 1973 classic, Houses of the Holy, Led Zeppelin took their music making genius to a completely new level. Funnily enough, this was the last of Led Zeppelin's studio albums that I bought, but it only took two or three listens for this work to become my favourite Led Zep album (I can never understand why I am in a minority amongst Led Zep fans with this view). Also, I would rate this as Led Zeppelin's most consistent album in they way that the tracks meld together one after the other in that kind of perfect, unexplainable manner. We also see the band expanding in their versatility by looking at some different avenues of music. The main example for this is seen in the 6th track on the album, D'yer M'aker were the band exhibit an interest in the reggae beat and style. There is also 'The Crunge' which is really funky in parts and has a style which Led Zeppelin are seen to show up in their follow up to this album, Physical Graffiti.
This is quite simply a fantastic album and I believe often doesn't quite get the credit of a classic it deserves. Many people often talk about Led Zep IV (Zoso) being the bands greatest work. True, IV is a great album, but Houses of the Holy, which is the follow up in my mind pips it to the post with its inginuity and creativity. I also think that this is the happiest of the Zeppelin albums in its style. If I've had a bad day, I always listen to this album as it is a great uplifter. If you listen to this album, I'm sure you'll feel the same and, even better, the CD insert has the words to the songs printed in it, so go on, sing along by all means! I think this album shows the band at their peak whilst they were together (a peak which was to continue through with Physical Graffiti). Below is how I rate the tracks:
The Song Remains the Same: This literally gets the album alive and kicking from the very start. Its a great track, with a catchy guitar riff and some rather experimental vocals from Robert Plant. 10/10
The Rain Song: The best track on the album. This track has everything. The slow tempo with classic lyrics works brilliantly with some great guitar work. This track literally powers your imagination into overdrive. Great climax at the end too. 11/10
Over the Hills and Far Away: Great follow up to the Rain Song. Starts in a classy acoustic fashion and this guitar work remains great throughout. Great lyrics again. 10/10
The Crunge: The whole band co-wrote this track and is kind of comic in some parts (especially at the end). The track incorporates some really funky rhythms which work well with the lyrics which roll on in great style. 10/10
Dancing Days: Has a guitar riff kind of reminiscent to the track Houses of the Holy (from Physical Graffiti - the fact this track didn't make it on HOTH shows how good this album is). 10/10
D'yer M'aker: Reggae style track which the band capture pretty well. Shows how versatile they are - from blues to reggae - amazing!! 9/10
No Quarter: This track is really spooky. Robert Plants vocals are eerie and Jimmy Page's guitar work here blends in brilliantly. Listen out for a great bass solo from John Paul Jones too! 10/10
The Ocean: A classic Zeppelin style round off to a perfect album. Theres a good bit on this track were you here all the band members harmonise on the vocals, completely out of surprise. 10/10
This album, even more so than Zeppelin's other albums is a must to add to your collection. If you've got this album but haven't played it for a while I hope this inspires you to play it again and rock on to a timeless classic from '73. Enjoy!

On a Hip note I did request for the MODERN ALBUM LIVE portion they look at FULLY COMPLETELY.... for some Canadian Content...
Mo go yet but they are doing 2112 for Canada Day and some Neil Young later in the fall

Chris... this is the real deal... the guy that dreamt this up is more passionate about music than you can imagine. After being the lead singer in the MIDNIGHT RAMBLERS for 20 years he has met some amazing session musicians and put this together.
Not sure if Zeppelins in you blood....and I know I sound like I'm a promoter or something but everyone I've brought out to these shows just cannot believe what they hear... It's a great concept to see for $15! - It's far from a tribute band too as I've stated before...
Let me know if you are going and I'll send you my cell so we can say hello at the show... gonna be packed tonight!

I saw them do "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "The Wall" and was very impressed. Led Zep II, well, not so. Mind you, Nick has a great high voice.
Also, I saw them do great jobs of "A Night At The Opera" and "Exile On Main St."
It's worth checking out. Fun times.

The last show was Houses of the Holy!
I've never seen anything like it. 2 double-neck guitars onstage, they brought out the chello on Kashmir... one of the guitarists used a bow during No Quarter I think...
The vocals were hauntingly close, the encore set included a sit down acoustic Going To California and the highlight for me which included the Mandolin was The Battle of Evermore where the lead vocalist traded screams back in forth with a female singer....this particulair song resembled the UNLEADDED version from the Page & Plant DVD... I can't say anymore...
Except get out this Thursday and see the 2nd Anniversary
