"The" Tragically Hip -
Stephen Dame - 03-30-2004
Not to be a prick but,
This forum should be called "The Tragically Hip Discussion" not "Tragically Hip Discussion." It'd be like going over to The Rolling Stones site or The Beatles site and seeing their names incorrectly spelled, and God knows what type of general anarchy and chaos that would cause.
It's "The" Tragically Hip.
Sincerley,
Prick.

That is true.... I have never thought of that, I will change it later..

WTF ? Leave it as is. Christ, nothing better to whine about . The Tragically Hip Discussion sounds gay , just like "The Beatles Discussion" sounds gay. Everyone knows they are The Tragically Hip and if you don't , you'll figure it out pretty quickly. So does this mean we change " Non Tragically Hip Discussion " to "Non The Tragically Hip Discussion" ???..Or maybe "Discussion that does not involve The Tragically Hip"?? Taking this a bit too serious, when you see The Hip refer to themselves as "The Hip" and "Das Hips" or " TTH"...I think they and everyone else has better things to worry about, but that's just how I see it.

Lance, don't change it. I always read it as: Tragically Hip Discussion. As in, "the discussion contained within the following forum is tragically hip." (Please note the capitalization). A little double entendre, just like many of the lyrics in their songs.

I agree! I call them "The Hip" all of the time. I think it's pretty easy to figure out. Especially since this is the Hip Base devoted to the Tragically Hip and there's a big ol' pic of the guys over the forum and the pic says "The Hip Base, The Tragically Hip Database". I say leave it.

Yeah Summit I know, I didn't say I didn't support him in his opinion. Personally I couldn't care less if you add 'The' or not.
He just seemed to be a little more passionate in that post than some of his others. Plus I've met him and he's a pretty cool guy, so I didn't expect the strength conveyed in his post on such a topic as the word 'The'. I've also chatted with Steve on AMTH and know that he can be a bit of a shit disturber now and again. To me, it was funny to see him signoff his thread-starter the way he did, but I can definitely see how it peaked other peoples interest.

mark, true enough, but try not to use 'gay' in such a derogatory manner...that just reeks of intolerance and ineptitude. im sure you didnt mean it that way or whatever, but i personally take considerable offence to such debauchary. why not try a friendly euphemism, like 'silly' :thumb:
...man i sound like a parent...

I don't want to put words into Mark's mouth, but I can be pretty certain that he was not using "gay" in terms of sexual preference... and it truly was not used as a "homophobic slur"....
Derogatory-perhaps to some, but an unfair assumption
Intolerace- no
Ineptitude- unfair assumption about someone you do not know
Remember, many words (especially in today's world) do not necessarily have one meaning and are used in many different ways... which is why you did not object at his use of "Christ" (both understood as religious and an exclaimation)....sooo.. errrr.....
And if we are going to go in depths into semantics, then we should all get our posts edited and have them written in formal MLA style.
So, I suppose Tragically Hip Discussion has turned into a "nit-pick" fest

Yes, I said what i said because it hit a nerve. When someone comes on to this site (which Lance has dedicated, god only knows how many hours to) and puts it down or critisizes it on their first post it makes me scratch my head

cratch: , especially something so trivial as "the". A person might want to start off their first post by saying " that's an awesome setlist archive" or "this is a great site for hip info". As Tony said we've met a few times before and I have mutual respect for him as well. I just don't think it's wise to bite the hand that feeds you, particularly when the food is free . As far as gay goes, clearly there was no reference to homosexuals, the emphasis was on how the phrase "The Tragically Hip Discussion " sounds gay , as in not grammatically correct , not as in "homosexual" or homosexually related or homosexually derrogatory. I do not think of it in terms of being a homosexual slur, although I see where you are coming from . It is not debaucherous. I can understand how calling a person "gay" would be offensive , unless you mean happy, but to say a phrase sounds gay, well maybe the phrase should be offended if anything. In my humble opinion.
