The Weakest Link - The Weakest Links - Round 6 -
gsmacleod - 11-14-2018
Born In The Water has taken the most votes (by a wide margin) and is the next eliminated.
1 - Another Midnight and Lionized
3 - The Rules
4 - Summer's Killing Us
5 - Hot Mic and Impossibilium
7 - Born In The Water
For the last of The Hip Weakest Link polls, we are going to turn the voting around; instead of voting for the song you think is the weakest, you are going to vote for the song you think is the strongest. We will then eliminate the song with the most votes and continue until we are left with the "champion" - the weakest song in the discography.
Vote for the song you feel is STRONGEST from the list. After 48 hours we will remove the song with the most votes and move on to round 7. In the event of a tie, both (or more) songs will be eliminated.
This round will end Friday 8:59am Eastern.
Happy voting,
Shane

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
There's no way Coconut Cream is the worst Hip song.

Agreed. Are You Ready and Werewolf are the worst Hip songs.

I agree that Are You Ready is the worst.
However, Frozen in My Tracks is probably the most forgettable (neck and neck with All Tore Up, which isn't on this list because Are You Ready is just so aggressively bad).

Agree. The worst characteristic a song could have is to be boring. Coconut Cream is not boring. It may be moronic, but it's got an interesting riff. Werewolf is campy and is a reflection of their youthful, inexperienced song writing, but it's not boring either.
Are You Ready and Pretend are just flat out dull. If I'm at a Hip concert and Coconut Cream comes on (and I did manage to see it once on the 1996 tour) or they haul out "Werewolf", I'm not leaving my seat. On the other hand, Are You Ready and Pretend are definite beer breaks.

I agree that the chorus for Are You Ready is forgettable and very non-Downie-esque. But the lyrics and melody associated with the verses is fine and I'll definitely be voting it above Coconut Cream, Werewolf and Pretend.

I don't hear a strong melody in the verses of Are You Ready. To me that's one of it's biggest problems. I think the melody in the verses of Coconut Cream is more memorable.

Frozen in My Tracks fan here. It'll continue to get my vote in this poll.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Are You Ready actually made the cut for the album, while obviously stronger songs like Ultra Mundane and Problem Bears were left off. Seriously, WTF were they thinking there? Such a baffling decision.

My theory: Gord loved the line "Permanent enough."

The lyrics of Are You Ready are lacklustre by Downie standards, but "permanent enough" is an interesting phrase. The one couplet that has me scratching my head is "They got safety fifth, And they take the world straight". It appears to be a drinking reference with "fifth" (similar to "...Two-fifths of lead free gasoline") and taking it "straight", but I can't quite put my finger on what he's implying. Possibly, a "throw caution to the wind and live carefree" suggestion in order to open yourself up to love? I dunno...

I assume it's a reference to "safety first" but that still makes your interpretation correct.
