The Weakest Link - Albums - Round 1 -
gsmacleod - 09-11-2018
We will now look at the albums and how they stack up; we will leave out the EP because it's an EP (and we all know where it would and anyway).
So, vote for the album that you feel is the weakest overall and after 24 hours we will remove the album with the most votes. In the event of a tie, both (or more) albums will be removed.
Voting will end on Wednesday at 8:42am Eastern.
Happy voting,
Shane

really guys? WATS by a long shot. it's not even close
I'm actually a little surprised that 3 people think M@W is worse than WATS
and 1 vote for MMP? some people just want to watch the world burn

I think I'm more surprised that someone voted for UTH as the weakest Hip album. Comparing UTH and WATS, song for song in running order:
Blow >/= Morning Moon
I'll Believe = Honey, Please
NOIS >/= The Last Recluse
38 YO > Coffee Girl
She > Struggle
Boots </= Depression Suite
Everytime > Exact Feeling
Weight > Queen of the Furrows
Trickle > Speed River
Midnight > Frozen in My Tracks
Opiated > Love is a First
According to my math, UTH beats the hell out of WATS.

Voted MMP because there are only 3 good songs on it. I really can't stand that album, although I could listen to Machine all day long.

I prefer WATS over WC. There, I said it.

I find it difficult sometimes to separate an albums merit vs the memories it brings back. When I stand back and look at WC, perhaps it is not a strong album, but it sure brings back some great memories during that time. Plus the added small venue Summer Fling tour before it came out, everyone having live recordings but not sharing as the new songs were not officially released yet, just added to the anticipation.
All that just makes it a better album to me. Maybe as a stand alone its not that great, but I do enjoy every song on that album due to the memories and that specific time in my life.

i don't love WC, but i can at least listen to it. for me, WATS is completely unlistenable. i honestly cannot get through it.

Morning Moon, Last Recluse, Depression Suite, Coffee Girl, and Country Day are all great. Unfortunately the rest of the album is mediocre filler, at least by Hip standards.
Despite Bob Rock's tasteless production on certain tracks, I think WC is the better album overall.

Agree, though I'd have Honey, Please on a second tier above mediocre.

"Filler" isn't a word I would have ever used for the Hip until M@W. There are a number of songs on there that test the attention span with undercooked melodies and impenetrable lyrics, but there is nothing that feels tossed off to me. When it comes to WATS, those songs fit the truer definition of filler, that being songs which not only test the attention span, but which require the skip button to be pressed every time. Struggle and Exact Feeling come immediately to mind.

Yeah, it's really those 5 that do it for me. For me, it's kind of like that for UTH as well - after Blow, NOIS, Boots, Opiated, and 38 there is a real drop-off. But those 5 are impressive. Just don't feel the same passion for the top songs on WC, but I guess I never really connected with that album. It's the only post-UTH Hip album that I didn't buy the first day it came out - I think I got it maybe 5 months after it came out and didn't hear much about the Hip during that time (had just moved to the States and was busy with career and family). I was back on board for WATS and just loved those 5 songs pretty much immediately.

Totally agree with you Dire.
